Diani Sands & Tsavo Two-Worlds Journey
Tour Overview
Dreaming of trading Ireland's wild Atlantic coast for the warm, turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean? This five-day journey offers the perfect blend of a relaxing Kenyan beach holiday and an authentic big-game safari.
This five-day journey has been created for travellers who want both an Indian Ocean retreat and an authentic Kenyan safari without rushing between regions. It begins and ends on the white sands of Diani Beach, where warm turquoise waters meet coastal forest, and blends seamlessly into a two-park exploration of Tsavo East and Tsavo West. Each step has been designed with comfort, practicality and conservation in mind, using road transfers that follow logical routes and lodges that prioritise both service and sustainability. Your time in Diani is deliberately unhurried. After arrival at Ukunda Airstrip or by road from Mombasa, you are transferred to a carefully selected beachfront hotel or boutique lodge, where you can decompress from travel with a swim, a walk on the beach or a quiet drink as the sun sets over the palms. The focus here is on the quieter, more natural side of the coast: rooms that open to sea breeze rather than loud nightlife, and properties that work actively to reduce plastic waste and protect the fragile marine environment. Optional activities, from guided reef walks to low-impact dhow cruises and responsible snorkelling, allow you to enjoy the ocean without placing pressure on coral or marine life. From Diani, you travel inland towards Tsavo East, watching the landscape transition from coastal greenery to open scrub and red-earth plains. Tsavo East is one of Kenya’s largest and wildest national parks, known for its big skies, red-dusted elephants and a strong sense of space. Here you settle into a lodge that combines comfort with a front-row seat to wildlife, often overlooking a waterhole or river where animals come to drink. Game drives focus on tracking elephants, lions, giraffes and the park’s rich birdlife, while your guide introduces you to the park’s complex history and current conservation efforts, including challenges posed by human-wildlife conflict along its boundaries. The next stage of your journey takes you across to Tsavo West, a park defined by dramatic lava flows, rugged hills and natural springs. The drive itself acts as an extended game drive, and by the time you arrive at your next lodge you have traced a subtle shift in ecology and scenery. Tsavo West offers excellent chances of seeing rhino in protected areas, hippos at crystal-clear Mzima Springs and striking views of Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days. Your lodge has been chosen for its vantage point and its environmental credentials, making use of solar energy and water conservation techniques to reduce its footprint in this fragile semi-arid landscape. Throughout the safari days, you travel in a private 4x4 with a professional guide, allowing for flexibility in timing, longer stops at sightings and unhurried photography. Drives generally take place in the early mornings and late afternoons when wildlife is most active, returning to camp for relaxed lunches and time to swim or rest during the heat of the day. Evenings often bring animals close to the lodges’ waterholes, meaning the safari never really stops even when you are back in camp. Discussions with staff and guides help illuminate how tourism revenue from visits like yours supports anti-poaching patrols, habitat management and local community projects. On your final day, you travel from Tsavo West back to Nairobi, crossing a landscape that few visitors see in such detail. The timing is planned to suit onward flights or additional nights in the capital. In just five days, you will have felt the contrast between the Kenyan coast and the interior, slept to the sound of waves and then of distant lions, and experienced two distinct but interconnected ecosystems. The itinerary is highly adaptable: extra nights can be added at the beach or in either park, and we can include charter flights for guests who prefer to reduce road distances while still keeping a close connection to the landscapes you have come to experience. Expera Adventures handles all logistics, ensuring that transfers are punctual, park fees are correctly managed and your preferences are communicated to each lodge before arrival. The tone of the trip is relaxed rather than regimented, with plenty of space for personal time and tailored activities, but underpinned by expert planning and a consistent conservation-aware ethos. It is an ideal choice for couples, friends or families seeking a balanced introduction to Kenya’s coast and savannah, with a premium feel and a clear sense of purpose behind every day.
Tour Highlights
Planning your trip from Ireland
Once you are rested, your adventure moves inland. You will travel by private 4x4 into the vast wilderness of Tsavo, watching the landscape transform from lush coastal palms to the iconic red-earth plains of East Africa. First, you'll explore Tsavo East, renowned for its 'red elephants' that dust themselves in the coloured soil. Your guide, an expert in the local ecology, will lead you in search of lions, giraffes, and abundant birdlife across wide-open savannas that stretch to the horizon.
Next, the journey continues to the more rugged and dramatic Tsavo West. Here, the scenery is shaped by volcanic hills and lava flows, with the incredible Mzima Springs offering a crystal-clear oasis where you can watch hippos underwater. On a clear day, you will even be treated to magnificent views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Your lodges in both parks are strategically located, often overlooking waterholes, so you can continue wildlife viewing with a drink in hand, right from the comfort of the camp.
This isn't a rushed, box-ticking tour. The pace is relaxed, with game drives in the early morning and late afternoon when animals are most active, and plenty of downtime during the midday heat to relax by the pool. The trip concludes with a transfer to Nairobi for your onward journey home. In just five days, you'll have experienced the profound contrast between Kenya’s tranquil coast and its wild heart, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Visa & Entry
Irish passport holders must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) online before departure. Your passport should be valid for at least six months from your date of entry into Kenya and have at least one blank page. We strongly advise confirming the latest requirements and applying only through the official Government of Kenya eTA portal well in advance of your travel.
Flights & Connections
There are no direct flights from Dublin (DUB) to Kenya, but excellent one-stop connections make the journey smooth. You can fly via major European hubs like Amsterdam or Paris, or through Middle Eastern hubs such as Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, into Nairobi (NBO). Total travel time is typically between 12 and 16 hours, including the layover.
Health, Climate & Packing
We recommend you consult your GP or a travel medicine clinic at least six weeks before your trip for advice on vaccinations and malaria prevention, as Tsavo and the coast are malaria areas. You'll be swapping Ireland's temperate climate for equatorial heat; Diani is hot and humid, while Tsavo is hot and dry by day but can be cool on early morning game drives. Pack light layers in neutral safari colours, swimwear, a sun hat, and a warm fleece for the evenings.
Money, Time & Culture
The local currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES), though US dollars are widely accepted for larger tourist expenses. Kenya is two hours ahead of Ireland during Irish Summer Time (IST) and three hours ahead in winter, so jet lag is minimal. Best of all, Kenya uses the same Type G three-pronged plug as Ireland, so you can leave your adaptors at home. A simple 'Jambo' (hello) will always be met with a warm smile.
Travel Advice
For the latest security and health advice, we recommend checking the official travel guidance for Kenya provided by the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs before you book and prior to departure.
Connectivity
While Wi-Fi is available in the lodges, it can be slow. For reliable data, you can easily buy a local SIM card (like Safaricom) upon arrival at the airport or set up an eSIM before you leave Ireland.
Tipping Customs
Tipping is customary for good service in Kenya. We recommend tipping your safari guide directly at the end of your trip and using the communal staff tip box at lodges; US dollars or Kenyan Shillings are preferred.
Guidance only — confirm visa, entry and health requirements with the official embassy or eVisa portal before you travel.
