Tour Overview

This one-day Nairobi experience is crafted for travellers with limited time who still want a genuine taste of Kenyan wildlife and conservation work. Ideal for layovers, business trips or the first day of a longer safari, it combines a classic game drive in Nairobi National Park with visits to leading conservation projects on the city’s edge. Instead of juggling separate taxis, tickets and timings, you book one all-inclusive day with a specialist guide who understands both the city’s rhythms and the stories behind the places you visit.

Your day starts early with a hotel or airport pick-up in a private, safari-ready vehicle and a short drive to Nairobi National Park. Here, open savannah, acacia woodland and riverine forest lie within sight of the city skyline. With your Expera guide, you will explore the park in search of lions, rhinos, giraffes, zebras and a wide range of plains game and birdlife. The aim is not to race from animal to animal, but to interpret what you are seeing: how wildlife survives alongside a large capital city, what pressures the park faces and how it fits into Kenya’s broader conservation picture.

After a full morning in the park, you leave the reserve and head to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s elephant orphanage (subject to availability and reservation), where keepers care for young elephants rescued from across Kenya. While the public session is limited to a specific time window, your guide will make sure you arrive in good time and help you find a good vantage point. The focus here is on understanding how habitat loss, human–wildlife conflict and poaching affect elephant populations, and how carefully managed rehabilitation can return some orphans to the wild.

A relaxed lunch at a restaurant in the Karen or Langata area follows, with your guide on hand to share insights into Nairobi’s history, culture and the practical realities of life in the city. In the afternoon, you visit the Giraffe Centre, where conservationists protect the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe. From raised platforms you can observe these animals at eye level and learn about efforts to increase their numbers in the wild. We brief guests carefully on responsible behaviour, ensuring interactions remain safe for both wildlife and visitors and avoiding gimmicks that put stress on the animals.

If time and your interests allow, the day can be rounded out with a stop at a local artisan craft centre or a short tour of the Karen Blixen Museum area, giving a sense of Nairobi’s creative and colonial-era heritage. Throughout the day, your vehicle, driver-guide, park fees and entry tickets are bundled into one transparent package, mirroring the convenience of all-inclusive products but with a stronger emphasis on quality guiding and conservation education. For guests with evening flights, we include time to return to your hotel or the airport with a buffer built in for city traffic.

This is a flexible itinerary designed to match the realities of modern travel. We adjust pick-up points to fit your flight schedule or meeting times, and we can tailor the day based on whether you are travelling as a solo guest, a couple, or a family with children. You gain a broad yet meaningful overview of Nairobi’s unique position as a metropolis bordered by wildlife, while supporting organisations that work daily to safeguard Kenya’s natural heritage.

Nairobi National Park, elephant orphans and giraffe conservation

Approx. 60–90 km total within and around Nairobi 2–3 hours total road driving plus 3–4 hours on game drive
Your guide collects you early from your hotel or directly from the airport, depending on your schedule, and you drive the short distance to Nairobi National Park. After completing entry formalities, you head straight into the park for a 3–4 hour game drive, taking advantage of the cooler morning temperatures when many animals are most active. With the city skyline as a striking backdrop, you search for rhinos, lions, giraffes, zebras, antelope and a wealth of birdlife. Your guide provides context on the park’s unusual position on the edge of a major city and the challenges and successes of conserving wildlife in such a setting.

Late in the morning you exit the park and travel to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s elephant orphanage in time for the daily visiting session, if prebooked. Here, keepers introduce you to young elephants and explain the stories behind their rescue and care. Afterward, you continue to a pleasant restaurant in Karen or Langata for lunch and a short rest. In the afternoon, you visit the Giraffe Centre to learn about the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe and the breeding and reintroduction work taking place. Time permitting, there may be an additional stop at a nearby craft centre or the Karen Blixen area before you are transferred back to your hotel or the airport. We aim to return you with ample time for your evening arrangements, taking Nairobi traffic into account.
