Tour Overview

Planning your escape from the Canadian landscape to Kenya's iconic savannahs and coastline? This 5-day fly-in safari and beach tour is the perfect, seamless way to experience the best of East Africa without spending your whole vacation in transit.

This five-day journey has been designed for travellers who want Kenya’s classic wildlife and coast experience without compromising on comfort or time. It combines a fly-in Maasai Mara safari with a refined stay on Diani’s powder-soft sands, allowing you to move effortlessly from big cat country to the Indian Ocean in a matter of hours, not days.

Your adventure begins in Nairobi, where a dedicated meet-and-greet team assists you from the moment you land. After a short transfer to Wilson Airport, you board a light aircraft bound for the Maasai Mara. The city falls away quickly, replaced by patchwork farms and finally by the rolling acacia-dotted plains that have come to define the safari dream. By the time you touch down at the bush airstrip, your safari vehicle is waiting, chilled refreshments at hand, ready to turn your transfer into your first game drive.

In the Mara, you spend two nights at an intimate, well-situated tented camp inside or adjacent to the main reserve, in a wildlife-rich sector chosen for predator activity and open landscapes. Spacious canvas suites with proper beds, ensuite bathrooms and hot showers create a sense of classic safari, while solar power and careful water use reflect a modern conservation ethic. You head out at first light and late afternoon when the animals are at their most active, and at night you fall asleep to a chorus of distant lion calls and the rustle of the savannah.

Game drives are unhurried and interpretive rather than box-ticking. Your professional guide tracks big cats along the riverbanks, follows elephant herds as they move between grazing grounds, and pauses patiently with you at cheetah sightings rather than rushing to the next vehicle cluster. Between drives you return to camp for freshly prepared meals, time by the pool, and perhaps a short guided walk around camp to learn more about plants, tracks and the smaller creatures that underpin the ecosystem.

On day three you take to the skies once more, flying via Nairobi or direct to Ukunda Airstrip. As you descend, the Mara’s golden grasslands give way to turquoise lagoons, coral reefs and long, empty beaches. A short road transfer takes you to your beach retreat, a boutique property on Diani’s quieter stretch, where palm-fringed gardens lead you down to the sand. Here the days move to a gentler rhythm: breakfast on an ocean-facing terrace, leisurely swims, spa treatments and sunset walks along the tideline.

While the focus at the coast is relaxation, there is plenty to do if you wish. You might opt for a half-day dhow excursion in search of dolphins, a guided snorkelling trip over the reef or a reef walk at low tide with a local marine guide. Back at the lodge, you can simply enjoy warm Indian Ocean breezes, fresh seafood and a carefully curated drinks list. The final morning offers time for one last swim before your transfer to Ukunda Airstrip and your flight back to Nairobi, where your onward arrangements begin.

Throughout the journey, the logistics are designed to remove friction: scheduled flights minimize long road transfers, private vehicle safaris keep game viewing exclusive, and your properties are chosen for reliable service and consistent quality. Expera Adventures also partners with camps and lodges that contribute to local conservancies and community projects, ensuring that your stay supports sustainable land use, wildlife protection and livelihoods in both the Mara and along the coast.

This itinerary is ideal for first-time visitors seeking a high-quality introduction to Kenya, couples wanting a short but indulgent break, or business travellers looking to add a curated mini-safari and beach stay to a regional trip. It can also be tailored with extra nights in either the Mara or Diani, or upgraded with a hot air balloon flight or private catamaran charter, to match the pace and level of exclusivity you prefer.

Planning your trip from Canada

For many Canadians, a trip to Africa is a significant undertaking, involving long flights and careful planning. Our Mara & Diani Signature Escape is designed precisely for you, maximising every precious moment on the ground to deliver an unforgettable Kenyan experience within a manageable five-day timeframe.

After your long-haul journey from Toronto, Montreal, or Vancouver, the last thing you want is a long, bumpy road transfer. That’s why this itinerary begins with a seamless connection. From Nairobi's international airport, you are whisked to a separate, smaller airport to board a light aircraft. Within minutes, you're soaring over the Great Rift Valley, watching the world transform from cityscapes to the vast, acacia-dotted plains of the Maasai Mara you've dreamed of. This isn't just a transfer; it's a breathtaking introduction to the scale of the African wilderness.

Your home for two nights is an intimate tented camp, a world away from a standard hotel. Think spacious canvas suites with comfortable beds and private ensuite bathrooms, blending classic safari romance with modern comforts. It’s here the magic truly begins. Your game drives are led by expert local guides who do more than just find wildlife; they interpret the behaviours of the lion prides, track leopards along riverbeds, and share the secrets of the savannah. The experience is unhurried and immersive, a stark and welcome contrast to the pace of daily life back home.

Just as you've settled into the rhythm of the bush, the journey shifts. Another scenic flight carries you from the savannah directly to the coast. You’ll trade the golden grasslands for the brilliant turquoise of the Indian Ocean, landing at Diani Beach, consistently voted one of Africa's best. Your boutique hotel is a tranquil retreat set on a quiet stretch of powder-white sand. Here, you can decompress completely. Whether you choose to snorkel in the coral reefs, sail on a traditional dhow, or simply relax by the water with a fresh seafood lunch, the days are yours to shape.

This itinerary is intelligently structured to give you two distinct, iconic Kenyan experiences without the logistical headaches. All internal flights, premium accommodations, and expert-led activities are coordinated for you. It’s the perfect high-impact trip for a first-time visitor, a couple seeking a special getaway, or anyone looking to add a truly spectacular wildlife and beach component to a business trip in the region. You'll return to Canada not just with photos, but with the profound feeling of having connected with the wild heart of Kenya.

Visa & Entry

Canadian passport holders require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) to enter Kenya, which must be applied for online before departure. Your passport should be valid for at least six months from your date of entry and have at least one blank page. We strongly advise checking the latest requirements and applying through Kenya's official government eTA portal well in advance of your travel dates.

Flights & Connections

There are no direct flights from Canada to Nairobi (NBO). Common and efficient routes involve a single stop in European hubs like Amsterdam (AMS), Paris (CDG), or London (LHR), or through Middle Eastern gateways such as Doha (DOH) or Dubai (DXB). Total travel time, including layovers, typically ranges from 18 to 24 hours.

Health, Climate & Packing

We recommend consulting a travel health clinic in Canada at least 6-8 weeks before your trip for advice on vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis, which is advised for the Maasai Mara and Diani. You'll be leaving Canada's distinct seasons for Kenya's equatorial climate; pack lightweight, neutral-coloured clothing, but don't forget a fleece or warm jacket. Much like an early summer morning in the Rockies, game drives before sunrise can be surprisingly chilly.

Money, Time & Culture

The local currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES), though US dollars are widely accepted at lodges for tips and extras. Major credit cards are accepted at your accommodations, but it's wise to carry some cash. Kenya uses the Type G (UK-style) three-pin socket, so you will need an adapter for your Canadian devices. Kenya is 7 to 10 hours ahead of Canadian time zones, so be prepared for some jet lag on arrival.

Staying Connected

Wi-Fi is available in the camps and lodges, but it can be slower than you're used to in Canada. For reliable connectivity, consider purchasing a Kenyan SIM card or an eSIM for your phone upon arrival in Nairobi.

Travel Advisories

While the Government of Canada may have advisories for specific regions of Kenya, this tour operates exclusively in well-established and secure tourist areas. Your safety is managed through guided transfers and stays in reputable properties.

Guidance only — confirm visa, entry and health requirements with the official embassy or eVisa portal before you travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kenya has transitioned to an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) system. All Canadian citizens must apply for and receive an approved eTA online before boarding their flight to Kenya. It has replaced the previous eVisa system for most visitors.

Airlines like KLM (via Amsterdam), Air France (via Paris), and Qatar Airways (via Doha) are popular choices from major Canadian cities like Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver. The best option depends on your departure city, connection times, and price.

Temperatures in the Maasai Mara can drop to 10-12°C in the early mornings before the sun rises. When you're in an open-sided safari vehicle, it feels even colder, so packing a fleece or windbreaker is essential for your comfort.

Canadian dollars are not easily exchanged in Kenya. It is best to bring US dollars for tipping and larger payments, and use a credit card or withdraw local Kenyan Shillings from an ATM for smaller purchases.

The Maasai Mara and Diani are in malaria-risk zones. It is highly recommended to consult a travel doctor in Canada about anti-malarial medication and to be diligent with insect repellent and wearing long sleeves in the evenings.

This journey operates year-round, with wildlife viewing in the Mara consistently strong from July to October during the migration and excellent resident game outside those months. Diani is warm throughout the year, with calmer seas typically from December to March and July to October.

By using scheduled light aircraft, the total air time is around two to three hours with a connection in Nairobi, plus short transfers to and from the airstrips, which keeps transit time low and maximises your time on safari and at the coast.

Children are welcome at many of our partner camps and beach lodges, but some have minimum age limits for game drives or specific room types. We recommend this itinerary for families with children aged six and above so that they can fully enjoy the safari experience.

The trip is rated easy, as most activities involve game drives and relaxed beach time. You should be comfortable climbing into a 4x4 and walking on uneven ground around camp and on the beach, but no strenuous hiking is required unless you request additional activities.

The package covers domestic flights, lodges, most meals, park fees, game drives and transfers. You will pay separately for items such as premium drinks, some lunches at the coast, optional activities, spa treatments, gratuities and any personal shopping.

Yes, we can extend your stay in either the Maasai Mara or Diani, upgrade camps or lodges, or add time in Nairobi before or after the trip to match your pace, interests and flight schedule.

Both the Mara and Diani lie in areas where malaria can occur, so many travellers choose to take prophylactic medication on the advice of their doctor. Routine travel vaccinations are also recommended; please consult your health provider well before departure.
