Diani Sands & Tsavo Two-Worlds Journey
Tour Overview
For many in France accustomed to the shores of the Côte d'Azur or the Atlantic, this Kenyan journey offers a remarkable contrast: the turquoise Indian Ocean seamlessly blended with the wild, red-earth landscapes of a classic African safari.
This five-day journey has been created for travellers who want both an Indian Ocean retreat and an authentic Kenyan safari without rushing between regions. It begins and ends on the white sands of Diani Beach, where warm turquoise waters meet coastal forest, and blends seamlessly into a two-park exploration of Tsavo East and Tsavo West. Each step has been designed with comfort, practicality and conservation in mind, using road transfers that follow logical routes and lodges that prioritise both service and sustainability. Your time in Diani is deliberately unhurried. After arrival at Ukunda Airstrip or by road from Mombasa, you are transferred to a carefully selected beachfront hotel or boutique lodge, where you can decompress from travel with a swim, a walk on the beach or a quiet drink as the sun sets over the palms. The focus here is on the quieter, more natural side of the coast: rooms that open to sea breeze rather than loud nightlife, and properties that work actively to reduce plastic waste and protect the fragile marine environment. Optional activities, from guided reef walks to low-impact dhow cruises and responsible snorkelling, allow you to enjoy the ocean without placing pressure on coral or marine life. From Diani, you travel inland towards Tsavo East, watching the landscape transition from coastal greenery to open scrub and red-earth plains. Tsavo East is one of Kenya’s largest and wildest national parks, known for its big skies, red-dusted elephants and a strong sense of space. Here you settle into a lodge that combines comfort with a front-row seat to wildlife, often overlooking a waterhole or river where animals come to drink. Game drives focus on tracking elephants, lions, giraffes and the park’s rich birdlife, while your guide introduces you to the park’s complex history and current conservation efforts, including challenges posed by human-wildlife conflict along its boundaries. The next stage of your journey takes you across to Tsavo West, a park defined by dramatic lava flows, rugged hills and natural springs. The drive itself acts as an extended game drive, and by the time you arrive at your next lodge you have traced a subtle shift in ecology and scenery. Tsavo West offers excellent chances of seeing rhino in protected areas, hippos at crystal-clear Mzima Springs and striking views of Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days. Your lodge has been chosen for its vantage point and its environmental credentials, making use of solar energy and water conservation techniques to reduce its footprint in this fragile semi-arid landscape. Throughout the safari days, you travel in a private 4x4 with a professional guide, allowing for flexibility in timing, longer stops at sightings and unhurried photography. Drives generally take place in the early mornings and late afternoons when wildlife is most active, returning to camp for relaxed lunches and time to swim or rest during the heat of the day. Evenings often bring animals close to the lodges’ waterholes, meaning the safari never really stops even when you are back in camp. Discussions with staff and guides help illuminate how tourism revenue from visits like yours supports anti-poaching patrols, habitat management and local community projects. On your final day, you travel from Tsavo West back to Nairobi, crossing a landscape that few visitors see in such detail. The timing is planned to suit onward flights or additional nights in the capital. In just five days, you will have felt the contrast between the Kenyan coast and the interior, slept to the sound of waves and then of distant lions, and experienced two distinct but interconnected ecosystems. The itinerary is highly adaptable: extra nights can be added at the beach or in either park, and we can include charter flights for guests who prefer to reduce road distances while still keeping a close connection to the landscapes you have come to experience. Expera Adventures handles all logistics, ensuring that transfers are punctual, park fees are correctly managed and your preferences are communicated to each lodge before arrival. The tone of the trip is relaxed rather than regimented, with plenty of space for personal time and tailored activities, but underpinned by expert planning and a consistent conservation-aware ethos. It is an ideal choice for couples, friends or families seeking a balanced introduction to Kenya’s coast and savannah, with a premium feel and a clear sense of purpose behind every day.
Tour Highlights
Planning your trip from France
Your journey begins with a chance to decompress on the coast, a familiar concept but with a distinctly tropical feel. After arriving at the coast, you'll be transferred to a boutique lodge where the pace is deliberately slow. Here, you can swap the bustle of European life for the gentle rhythm of the Indian Ocean, enjoying warm waters and sunsets over the palm trees. The selected properties are not just about comfort; they are committed to sustainability, a value we know is important, focusing on protecting the fragile marine ecosystem.
From the coast, your private 4x4 vehicle and guide will take you inland, a fascinating transition from lush greenery to the vast, semi-arid plains of Tsavo East. This is Kenya as you have likely imagined it: immense skies, acacia-dotted landscapes, and the famous 'red elephants' dusted with the park's iron-rich soil. Your lodge provides a stunning viewpoint, often overlooking a waterhole, allowing you to watch wildlife even during your downtime. Game drives are timed for the best viewing opportunities in the early morning and late afternoon, focused on finding lions, giraffes, and the incredible diversity of birdlife.
The adventure continues into Tsavo West, a landscape of dramatic contrasts shaped by ancient volcanic activity. Here, you'll discover crystal-clear Mzima Springs, where hippos wade, and rugged lava flows. On a clear day, the views of Mount Kilimanjaro are simply breathtaking. As with every stop, your accommodation is chosen for its stunning location and its commitment to operating with a minimal environmental footprint.
Throughout the safari, the rhythm is relaxed. There is ample time during the mid-day heat to enjoy the lodge's facilities, perhaps taking a swim or simply reading a book on your veranda. On your final day, a scenic road transfer brings you back to Nairobi in time for your onward travel, completing a compact but incredibly rich loop through Kenya's diverse landscapes. In just five days, you'll have experienced two very different worlds, all handled with seamless logistics by our expert team.
Visa & Entry
French citizens require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) to enter Kenya, which must be applied for online before your departure. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of entry and contain at least two blank pages. We strongly advise confirming the most current requirements and applying only through the official Government of Kenya eTA portal.
Flights & Connections
From Paris (CDG), you can fly directly to Nairobi (NBO) with Air France or Kenya Airways in about 8.5 hours. Excellent one-stop options are also available via hubs like Amsterdam (KLM), Dubai (Emirates), or Doha (Qatar), with total journey times usually between 11 and 14 hours. Your journey can be tailored to fly into Mombasa (MBA) to start directly on the coast.
Health, Climate & Packing
We recommend consulting your doctor well in advance to discuss any necessary vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis for Kenya's coastal and savanna regions. Kenya's climate is warm year-round, so pack lightweight clothing in neutral colours, a wide-brimmed hat, high-SPF sunscreen, and insect repellent. A fleece or light jacket is essential for cool early mornings and evenings, a significant contrast to a warm French summer night.
Money, Time & Culture
Kenya's currency is the Shilling (KES). While major credit cards are accepted at lodges, carrying some local currency for tips and small purchases is advisable. The time difference is minimal, with Kenya being only one or two hours ahead of France, which helps avoid significant jet lag. You will need a Type G (UK style) plug adapter, as Kenyan sockets are different from those used in France.
French Language Support
While all our professional guides are fluent in English, we can often arrange for a private French-speaking guide for your safari. Please let us know your preference when booking, as this is subject to availability and a supplementary cost.
Connectivity
To stay connected affordably, consider purchasing a local SIM card or an eSIM upon arrival at the airport in Kenya. This is typically much more economical for data than using your French provider's international roaming services.
Guidance only — confirm visa, entry and health requirements with the official embassy or eVisa portal before you travel.
