Tour Overview

This nine-day journey blends Kenya’s classic overland safari experience with a restorative stay on the south coast, designed for travellers who want to see more of the country than a single park can offer. Travelling mostly by road gives you a tangible sense of distance and landscape, as open savannah gives way to volcanic hills and, finally, to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. With a maximum of ten guests, the experience feels intimate and flexible, yet remains practical and well priced for a premium product.

Your adventure begins in Nairobi, then heads south to Amboseli National Park, famous for its elephant herds and views of Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days. Two nights here allow unhurried game drives and time to understand the delicate balance between wildlife and Maasai pastoralists. From Amboseli, the route continues east into the lava plains and dramatic outcrops of Tsavo West, one of Kenya’s most atmospheric parks, home to rhino sanctuaries, rugged cliffs and natural springs. Here, you stay in a well-situated lodge that balances comfort and authenticity, with wide views over the bush.

The safari then moves on to Tsavo East, known for its vast spaces, red-dusted elephants and big skies. By combining these three parks, you track wildlife across different habitats rather than repeating the same terrain each day. Your driver-guide is with you throughout, adjusting each day’s plan based on seasonal conditions and your interests, whether that is photography, birding, big cats or simply soaking in the landscape. With Expera’s practical operational knowledge, driving segments are broken up with scenic stops, and lunch arrangements are made to keep days focused but not exhausting.

On day six you leave Tsavo and descend towards the coast, arriving at Diani or another carefully chosen south-coast beach location in time to feel the change in air and pace. Your coastal resort or boutique lodge sits on or close to a white-sand beach, with warm, shallow waters protected by an offshore reef. Here you have three nights to slow down: swim, walk the beach, try optional snorkeling or a dhow cruise, or simply enjoy the comfort of your room and the shade of palm trees. The itinerary is structured so that you do not have to repack and move hotels once you reach the coast.

Throughout the journey, conservation and community engagement are more than marketing words. In Amboseli and the Tsavo parks, your park fees and lodge stays help maintain corridors and fund rangers. At the coast, we encourage partners who minimise plastic use and support marine conservation initiatives, such as protecting turtle nesting sites or rehabilitating damaged reef. If you wish, we can arrange low-key visits to projects that are genuinely community-driven, providing insight without feeling intrusive.

This itinerary suits couples, families with school-age children, and small groups of friends who appreciate the rhythm of travel by road and the reward of ending with the ocean. Accommodation is in quality mid- to high-end lodges and resorts with private facilities, reliable hot water, and good food, but without unnecessary ostentation. Vehicles are custom 4x4s or high-quality safari minibuses depending on your group size and preference, all with window seats for every traveller. With Expera Adventures, your journey is carefully sequenced so that each drive and each overnight adds something distinct, building up a coherent, memorable picture of Kenya.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, the route is family-friendly and also suits older travellers, but it does involve several medium-length road transfers. We recommend it for children over 5 years, and we can adapt driving times and lodge choices to match your family’s needs and mobility.

On travel days between destinations, you can expect 4–6 hours of driving broken up with comfort and photo stops. On full safari days, driving is mainly within the parks during game drives, usually 4–6 hours in total split between morning and afternoon.

We typically use quality mid- to high-end lodges and resorts with en-suite rooms, reliable hot water and good food. In many locations we can upgrade to more exclusive camps or boutique coastal properties if you prefer a higher level of luxury.

The trip runs well throughout the year, but June to October and December to March usually offer the most comfortable conditions, with lower humidity and good wildlife viewing. The long rains in April–May can bring muddy roads and some lodge closures on the coast.

Yes, the coastal component is very flexible. You can reduce it to two nights if time is tight or extend to a full week if you want a longer break. We adjust transfers, flights and pricing accordingly.

At most south coast resorts, a main-course lunch typically costs between USD 15 and 25 per person, depending on your choices. We can pre-arrange half-board or full-board at the beach if you prefer more predictable costs.

While road travel has a footprint, it avoids additional domestic flights and allows us to support locally owned lodges and roadside communities. We also prioritise fuel-efficient vehicles, stick to established park tracks and can suggest carbon offset options if you wish.

Cancellation terms vary slightly by season and property, but in general, more flexible conditions apply up to 60 days before departure, with higher charges closer to travel due to lodge policies. We outline exact terms in your proposal and recommend comprehensive travel insurance.

Tonight is about resetting your body clock and preparing for the early start that marks the true beginning of your Kenyan journey.

Road to Amboseli and first game drive

Approx. 220 km Nairobi–Amboseli 4–5 hours including comfort stops
After an early breakfast, you depart Nairobi by road, heading south towards Amboseli National Park. The drive typically takes 4–5 hours, with changing scenery as the urban edge gives way to small towns, open plains and, on clear days, glimpses of Mount Kilimanjaro ahead. Arrive at your Amboseli lodge or camp in time for lunch and a short rest. In the afternoon, head out on your first game drive within the park, scanning for elephant herds moving between swamps, buffalo grazing the wetlands, and big cats resting on higher ground. Your guide will explain how Amboseli’s underground water systems feed the park’s marshes and why this attracts such concentrations of wildlife. Return to camp as the sun sets, with Kilimanjaro’s silhouette often framing the horizon, and enjoy dinner and a relaxed evening under the stars.
Activities: Drive from Nairobi to Amboseli National Park
Check-in at lodge or camp and lunch on arrival
Afternoon game drive in Amboseli with professional guide
Scenic sunset viewing with potential Kilimanjaro backdrop
Dinner and overnight at Amboseli lodge or camp
3

Full day exploring Amboseli

Variable distances within Amboseli National Park 4–6 hours total game viewing time split across the day
Spend a full day exploring Amboseli’s varied habitats, usually with a morning and afternoon game drive and a break back at camp over the hottest part of the day. An early start increases your chances of clear views of Kilimanjaro and of predators on the move. You may encounter large elephant families, often with calves, crossing in front of your vehicle or wading through the marshes, flanked by flocks of waterbirds. Your guide will interpret elephant behaviour, note identifying features, and explain current research and conservation measures in the area. Between drives, take time to relax at the lodge, enjoy the pool or simply sit with a pair of binoculars on the deck. In the late afternoon, return to the park for more wildlife encounters in the softer light, before another comfortable night at your lodge.
Activities: Early morning game drive in Amboseli National Park
Midday rest at lodge with optional pool time
Afternoon game drive focusing on different areas of the park
Guiding focused on elephant behaviour and conservation themes
Dinner and overnight at Amboseli lodge or camp

Amboseli to Tsavo West via scenic lava landscapes

Approx. 200–230 km Amboseli–Tsavo West depending on route 4–5 hours including park entry formalities
After breakfast and a final short game drive or relaxed start, you leave Amboseli and travel east towards Tsavo West National Park. The drive reveals a different side of Kenya, with volcanic cones, lava flows and thornbush country gradually replacing the open plains. Enter Tsavo West and continue to your lodge, located near key attractions such as natural springs or panoramic viewpoints. Depending on timing, you enjoy lunch either en route or on arrival. In the afternoon, venture out for a game drive, visiting highlights like Mzima Springs, where you may see hippos and fish in remarkably clear water, or exploring the rocky ridges that offer wide views over this dramatic park. Tsavo West’s wildlife can be more elusive than Amboseli’s, but the sense of space and wilderness is striking. Return to your lodge for dinner and a restful night.
Activities: Morning departure from Amboseli with optional short game drive
Scenic road transfer to Tsavo West National Park
Check-in at Tsavo West lodge and lunch

Tsavo West to Tsavo East for expansive wilderness

Approx. 150–200 km between Tsavo West and Tsavo East sectors 3–4 hours excluding game drives
This morning you may take a short exploratory drive in Tsavo West before continuing your overland journey to Tsavo East, crossing the highway that links Nairobi and Mombasa. As you enter Tsavo East, the landscape opens into broad plains punctuated by distant hills. The park is known for its dust-red elephants, which often coat themselves in the coloured soil, as well as a wide variety of plains game and predators. Arrive at your lodge or camp in time for lunch, then spend the afternoon exploring the surrounding area on a game drive. Your guide will explain the history of Tsavo, its role in Kenya’s conservation story, and the challenges of managing such a large protected area. As the day cools, look for elephants heading to waterholes and birds congregating along seasonal rivers. Return to camp for dinner and overnight.
Activities: Optional short morning game drive in Tsavo West
Road transfer from Tsavo West to Tsavo East National Park
Check-in at Tsavo East lodge or camp and lunch

Enjoy a final early morning game drive in Tsavo East, taking in the park’s sense of scale and any last wildlife encounters you might wish for. After breakfast back at the lodge, you check out and begin the drive south-east towards the Kenyan coast. The road gradually descends as the climate becomes warmer and more humid, and you may pass roadside markets and small towns that give a glimpse of everyday life along this busy route. Depending on your chosen beach destination, you either continue by road all the way to Diani or connect via Mombasa and the Likoni ferry. Arrive at your coastal resort or boutique lodge by late afternoon, where you can trade dust for sea breeze, check into your room and enjoy your first glimpse of the Indian Ocean before dinner.
