Mara & Diani Signature Escape – Fly-In Bush and Beach
Tour Overview
Trading Ireland's forty shades of green for the golden plains of the Maasai Mara has never been more seamless on this five-day fly-in safari and beach escape.
Your adventure begins in Nairobi, where a dedicated meet-and-greet team assists you from the moment you land. After a short transfer to Wilson Airport, you board a light aircraft bound for the Maasai Mara. The city falls away quickly, replaced by patchwork farms and finally by the rolling acacia-dotted plains that have come to define the safari dream. By the time you touch down at the bush airstrip, your safari vehicle is waiting, chilled refreshments at hand, ready to turn your transfer into your first game drive.
In the Mara, you spend two nights at an intimate, well-situated tented camp inside or adjacent to the main reserve, in a wildlife-rich sector chosen for predator activity and open landscapes. Spacious canvas suites with proper beds, ensuite bathrooms and hot showers create a sense of classic safari, while solar power and careful water use reflect a modern conservation ethic. You head out at first light and late afternoon when the animals are at their most active, and at night you fall asleep to a chorus of distant lion calls and the rustle of the savannah.
Game drives are unhurried and interpretive rather than box-ticking. Your professional guide tracks big cats along the riverbanks, follows elephant herds as they move between grazing grounds, and pauses patiently with you at cheetah sightings rather than rushing to the next vehicle cluster. Between drives you return to camp for freshly prepared meals, time by the pool, and perhaps a short guided walk around camp to learn more about plants, tracks and the smaller creatures that underpin the ecosystem.
On day three you take to the skies once more, flying via Nairobi or direct to Ukunda Airstrip. As you descend, the Mara’s golden grasslands give way to turquoise lagoons, coral reefs and long, empty beaches. A short road transfer takes you to your beach retreat, a boutique property on Diani’s quieter stretch, where palm-fringed gardens lead you down to the sand. Here the days move to a gentler rhythm: breakfast on an ocean-facing terrace, leisurely swims, spa treatments and sunset walks along the tideline.
While the focus at the coast is relaxation, there is plenty to do if you wish. You might opt for a half-day dhow excursion in search of dolphins, a guided snorkelling trip over the reef or a reef walk at low tide with a local marine guide. Back at the lodge, you can simply enjoy warm Indian Ocean breezes, fresh seafood and a carefully curated drinks list. The final morning offers time for one last swim before your transfer to Ukunda Airstrip and your flight back to Nairobi, where your onward arrangements begin.
Throughout the journey, the logistics are designed to remove friction: scheduled flights minimize long road transfers, private vehicle safaris keep game viewing exclusive, and your properties are chosen for reliable service and consistent quality. Expera Adventures also partners with camps and lodges that contribute to local conservancies and community projects, ensuring that your stay supports sustainable land use, wildlife protection and livelihoods in both the Mara and along the coast.
This itinerary is ideal for first-time visitors seeking a high-quality introduction to Kenya, couples wanting a short but indulgent break, or business travellers looking to add a curated mini-safari and beach stay to a regional trip. It can also be tailored with extra nights in either the Mara or Diani, or upgraded with a hot air balloon flight or private catamaran charter, to match the pace and level of exclusivity you prefer.
Tour Highlights
Planning your trip from Ireland
Your adventure starts the moment you land in Nairobi. From there, it’s a quick hop by light aircraft to the legendary Maasai Mara. The view from your window transforms from city suburbs to the vast, acacia-studded landscapes you’ve seen in documentaries, building anticipation for the wildlife encounters to come. You’ll spend two nights here in an intimate tented camp, which offers a far cry from camping back home; think spacious canvas suites with proper beds, ensuite bathrooms, and hot showers, all while being immersed in the sounds of the African bush.
Your days are timed to the rhythm of the wildlife. Early morning and late afternoon game drives with your expert guide focus on finding the Mara’s famous big cats and vast herds of elephant and plains game. The experience is unhurried and interpretive, allowing you to truly observe and appreciate the animal behaviours unfolding before you, a world away from the rush of daily life.
Just as you’ve settled into the safari routine, you’ll take to the skies again, flying directly from the bush to the beach. You'll trade the savannah for the sparkling turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean as you land near Diani Beach. Your home here is a boutique retreat on a quiet stretch of powder-white sand, where the pace slows right down. The warm coastal air is a perfect contrast to both the cool Mara evenings and the often unpredictable Irish climate. Spend your time swimming in the warm sea, walking the pristine beach, or simply relaxing by the pool with a book.
This compact, high-quality tour is the perfect introduction to Kenya's incredible diversity. All the logistics are handled for you, from internal flights to transfers and meals, ensuring your journey is as smooth and relaxing as possible. It’s an ideal escape for couples or anyone seeking a short but luxurious break that combines iconic wildlife with blissful coastal relaxation.
Visa & Entry
Irish citizens travelling to Kenya require an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before their journey, which must be applied for online. Your passport should be valid for at least six months from your date of entry and have at least two blank pages. We strongly advise confirming the latest requirements and applying via the official Government of Kenya eTA portal well in advance of your departure.
Flights & Connections
Flights from Dublin (DUB) to Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) typically involve one convenient connection. Popular routes are via major European hubs like Amsterdam, Paris or Frankfurt, or through Middle Eastern gateways such as Dubai or Doha. Total travel time, including a layover, usually ranges from 12 to 15 hours.
Health, Climate & Packing
We strongly recommend you consult your GP or a travel clinic 6-8 weeks before departure for personalised advice on vaccinations and malaria prevention for the Maasai Mara and coast. You'll be swapping Ireland's changeable weather for equatorial warmth; pack lightweight, neutral-coloured clothing, a warm fleece for surprisingly cool Mara mornings, and your swimwear for tropical Diani. A sun hat and high-SPF sunscreen are essential, as the sun is much stronger than at home.
Money, Time & Culture
The local currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES), but US dollars are widely accepted for tips. Credit cards are fine at all included properties. Kenya is two hours ahead of Ireland during Irish Summer Time (and three hours ahead in winter). A great convenience is that Kenya uses the same Type G three-pin electrical socket as Ireland, so you won't need any adapters.
Connectivity & Staying in Touch
While your Irish mobile network will work on roaming, costs can be high. For a cheaper option, consider an eSIM for data before you leave or purchasing a local Safaricom SIM card upon arrival. Wi-Fi is available in your camps and lodges, but may be slower than you are used to.
Tipping Guidance
Tipping for good service is a welcome custom in Kenya. We suggest carrying smaller US dollar bills or Kenyan Shillings for your safari guide, camp staff, and drivers. Our pre-departure information pack will provide you with more detailed guidelines.
Guidance only — confirm visa, entry and health requirements with the official embassy or eVisa portal before you travel.
