Tour Overview

This ten-day itinerary is built for travelers who want a complete Kenya experience in a manageable timeframe. It stitches together the freshwater shores of Lake Naivasha, the bird-rich savannahs around Lake Nakuru, the big skies and big cats of the Maasai Mara, and a soft landing on the white sands of Diani. Instead of treating the coast as a separate trip, this journey flows logically from highland lakes to plains to the sea, with flying used where it adds value and road segments chosen for scenery and connection.

Your first days are spent on the floor of the Rift Valley, where Naivasha and Nakuru offer a gentler introduction to Kenya’s wildlife than a direct dash to the Mara. At Naivasha you stay in a comfortable lodge along the lakeshore, where you can watch hippos surface at dusk and hear the rich birdlife before dawn. A guided boat ride and a walk among giraffe and antelope on nearby crescent or conservancy land give you a feel for the ecosystem at a relaxed pace. At Nakuru, you drive deeper into the park’s hills and acacia woods in search of rhino, lion, and an array of bird species, with your guide interpreting behavior and the pressures facing this small but important protected area.

With your senses attuned, you continue to the Maasai Mara, where the landscape opens out and the density of wildlife increases. Your tented camp is chosen for its access to rich game-viewing areas and its commitment to working with local Maasai communities. Over three nights, you have space for unhurried morning and afternoon game drives, with the possibility of adding a walking safari in a conservancy area or a sunrise balloon flight. Your guide will help you look beyond the Big Five, explaining how predators, plains game, and scavengers interact, and how seasonality and the migration shape life on the savannah. Evenings are spent around a fire or on a lantern-lit deck, listening to nocturnal sounds and talking through the day’s sightings.

After the intensity of the Mara, you fly south to Ukunda airstrip for a shift in tempo. In Diani you check into a refined coastal lodge where the focus is on rest, swimming, and quiet reflection on the days behind you. The beach is wide and soft, with the reef visible offshore. You have two full days here to tune your schedule to your energy: early walks along the tide line, time by the pool, or optional low-impact activities such as a guided beach ecology walk or a visit to a nearby community project. The idea is not to cram in more, but to let the experiences of the Rift Valley and Mara settle while your body enjoys salt water and sea breezes.

Throughout the journey, you travel with guides and partners who are candid about conservation realities and community relationships. At each stop, you will see how tourism revenue supports rangers, schools, or conservation programs, and where the tensions and trade-offs lie. The result is a trip that feels cohesive and grounded rather than a string of disconnected highlights. You end back at Diani’s shoreline, ready either to fly home or to continue exploring, with a sense of having seen Kenya from lakes to plains to sea in a way that is both enriching and restorative.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Follow your journey through 10 incredible days of adventure.

1

Arrive in Nairobi and Transfer to Lake Naivasha

90–110 km from Nairobi to Naivasha 2–3 hours depending on traffic and stops
On arrival in Nairobi, you are met by an Expera representative who will assist with arrival formalities where possible before you set off by road towards Lake Naivasha. The drive takes you down the escarpment into the Great Rift Valley, with views over patchwork fields and occasional stops at viewpoints if time and conditions allow. Reaching Naivasha in the early to mid-afternoon, you check into your lakeside lodge and have time to settle in, stretch your legs, and absorb the calmer air after the city. Depending on your arrival time and energy, there may be an opportunity for a short guided walk in the lodge grounds or simply a relaxed tea on the lawn while watching for birds and the occasional glimpse of hippos out on the water. Dinner is served at the lodge, and your guide will outline the plan for the following day.
Activities: Meet and greet on arrival in Nairobi
Private road transfer from Nairobi to Lake Naivasha
Check-in and relaxation at lakeside lodge
Optional short walk in lodge grounds or lakeshore viewing
2

Lake Naivasha Boat Safari and Crescent Walk

Short road transfers to and from the jetty if needed Less than 30 minutes combined road time
Wake to the calls of waterbirds and the soft light over Lake Naivasha. After breakfast, you head to the jetty for a guided boat excursion on the lake. Your guide will help you spot pelicans, cormorants, fish eagles, and other species, as well as hippos wallowing in the shallows. The pace is unhurried, with plenty of time for watching and photography. Later in the morning, you disembark on Crescent Island or a similar conservancy area, where a guided walk among zebra, giraffe, and antelope gives you a different perspective from the vehicle-based safaris to come. With no big predators present, walking here feels relaxed but purposeful, with your guide sharing insights into plant life and animal behavior. You return to the lodge for lunch and a quiet afternoon by the pool or garden, with the option of an additional short activity if you wish. Dinner is again at the lodge.
Activities: Guided boat safari on Lake Naivasha
Walking safari on Crescent Island or similar conservancy
Birdwatching and hippo viewing with expert interpretation
Afternoon at leisure at the lakeside lodge
3

Lake Nakuru National Park Game Drives

80–120 km by road from Naivasha to Nakuru 2–3.5 hours including park entry formalities
After breakfast, you depart Naivasha and head deeper into the Rift Valley towards Lake Nakuru National Park. The drive takes you through farmland and small towns before you enter the park, where acacia woodland and open plains frame the alkaline lake. Once inside, you begin your first game drive, watching for buffalo, zebra, waterbuck, and, with luck, both black and white rhino which Nakuru is known to protect. Your guide will choose a route based on current wildlife movements and road conditions, aiming to maximize variety while keeping the day comfortable. A picnic lunch is taken at a scenic spot, or you may stop at a lodge inside the park depending on your preferences. After a full afternoon of game viewing, you exit the park and head to your overnight lodge or remain at an in-park lodge if that is your chosen configuration. Dinner is served as you trade first impressions of the wildlife and the park’s conservation story.
Activities: Road transfer from Naivasha to Lake Nakuru National Park
Extended game drive inside Lake Nakuru National Park
Picnic or lodge lunch inside the park
Overnight at a lodge in or near the park
4

Drive to the Maasai Mara and First Evening Game Drive

220–280 km by road depending on route and camp 5–6.5 hours including comfort stops
This morning you set off towards the Maasai Mara, watching the landscape shift from the Rift Valley’s cultivated areas to more open plains as you approach the reserve. The road journey includes sections of paved and graded surfaces and offers a chance to see a side of Kenya that is often missed from the air: roadside markets, herds of livestock, and wide horizons. You arrive at your Mara camp in time for a late lunch and a brief rest. As the afternoon cools, you head out on your first game drive in the reserve or adjoining conservancy, eyes open for elephants, giraffe, antelope, and the cats that have made the Mara famous. Your guide will introduce you to the territory and explain how game movements vary with season and grass conditions. Returning to camp at dusk, you can freshen up before dinner and, if you wish, sit by the fire to listen to night sounds and talk through what the next two full days may hold.
Activities: Road transfer from Lake Nakuru region to Maasai Mara
Check-in and lunch at tented camp or lodge
Afternoon game drive in the Mara or nearby conservancy
Evening at camp with dinner and optional fireside time
5

Full Day of Game Viewing in the Maasai Mara

Variable within the Mara depending on sightings 4–6 hours game driving spread across the day
You have a full day to immerse yourself in the wildlife of the Maasai Mara. After an early wake-up and coffee, you set out for a morning game drive at first light, when predators are often still active and the air is cool. Your guide will seek out a range of habitats, from open plains to riverlines, explaining what makes each area productive at different times of year. You return to camp for a hearty breakfast or brunch, followed by a rest during the heat of the day. In the afternoon, you head out again, perhaps focusing on a particular area where you heard of lion on the move, or simply following your guide’s instincts and local knowledge. Optional experiences such as a visit to a nearby Maasai homestead can be arranged, offering context on how people and wildlife coexist. As the sun sets, you might stop for a sundowner before returning to camp for dinner and another night under canvas.
Activities: Early morning and late afternoon game drives in the Mara
Extended wildlife viewing with experienced safari guide
Optional cultural visit to a Maasai homestead (pre-bookable)
Down time at camp between drives to rest and enjoy the setting
6

Second Full Day in the Mara or Conservancy Walk

Variable within the Mara and any conservancy used 4–6 hours game driving, plus optional walking time
Your second full day in the Mara allows you to deepen rather than repeat the experience. After another early start, you might focus on a different sector of the reserve, or, if conditions and your camp’s location allow, incorporate a guided nature walk in a nearby conservancy area for a change of pace and perspective. Walking, where permitted, is slower and more detailed, emphasizing tracks, plants, and smaller wildlife. Back at camp, lunch and siesta time give way to your final afternoon drive, often a chance to return to an area where you enjoyed particular sightings the day before. Those who wish can book a sunrise balloon flight at additional cost, which would shift the pattern of the day but offer a remarkable aerial view of the plains. Your final night in the Mara is a good time to talk with your guide about the broader conservation landscape and the role that camp and conservancy models play in the region.
Activities: Morning and afternoon game drives or optional guided walk in conservancy
Focus on varied habitats and species across the day
Time at leisure in camp between activities
Optional sunrise hot-air balloon flight (extra cost, pre-booking required)
7

Fly from the Mara to Diani Beach

Short road transfers plus regional flight 1–2 hours road transfer combined; flight time around 2–3 hours including stops
This morning you take a final look at the Mara, either with a short early game drive or a more leisurely breakfast, depending on your flight schedule. You are then transferred to the nearest airstrip to board a light aircraft flight that carries you south towards the Kenyan coast, often with a brief stop in Nairobi. As you descend towards Ukunda, the colors shift from browns and greens to the blues and whites of the ocean and reef. On arrival at Ukunda airstrip, you are met and driven a short distance to your Diani lodge. Check in, drop your bags, and take in the new setting: palms, sand, and the sound of waves. The rest of the afternoon is unstructured to allow for a swim, a nap, or a simple walk to the beach. Dinner is at the lodge, where the menu may feature coastal ingredients and a softer pace after your days on safari.
Activities: Transfer from Mara camp to local airstrip
Scheduled light aircraft flight from Mara to Ukunda (often via Nairobi)
Meet and greet at Ukunda and private transfer to Diani lodge
Free afternoon to settle in and enjoy the beach setting
8

Diani Beach Day at Leisure with Optional Activities

Minimal walking distances around lodge and beach No scheduled driving today
Your first full day at the coast is intentionally comfortable and flexible. Begin with a leisurely breakfast, listening to the sea and the rustle of palm fronds. You can then choose how active you would like to be. Some guests simply enjoy the lodge’s pool, gardens, and beachfront, taking slow walks along the tideline and reading in the shade. Others opt for light, optional activities, such as a guided beach ecology walk to understand the reef and intertidal zone, a gentle kayak outing in a nearby creek, or a massage. The focus is on recovery and reflection after the intensity of safari days, with the sea breeze and warm water helping you unwind. Lunch is served at the lodge or a nearby partner restaurant, and your evening remains unhurried, with another dinner at your base.
Activities: Day at leisure to enjoy beach, pool, and lodge facilities
Optional guided beach ecology walk
Optional low-impact water activities such as kayaking (extra cost)
Relaxed coastal meals and time for rest and reflection
9

Second Day on the Coast and Community Connection

Short local road transfers if community visit is chosen Up to 1 hour combined driving for any local visit
On your second day in Diani, you have another full day to balance rest with meaningful experiences. After breakfast, you may wish to visit a nearby community initiative, such as a skills training center, a women’s cooperative, or a small-scale conservation project. Your guide will facilitate introductions and help frame the visit so that it is informative and respectful. The idea is to give you a sense of the social fabric behind the beach hotels and to show how tourism revenue can contribute to local resilience. You return to the lodge by lunchtime or early afternoon, with the rest of the day free for the sea and sand. As this is your final full day on the coast, you might choose a slightly special dinner—perhaps a seafood-focused menu or a private table if you wish—while you look back on your days from lakes to plains to ocean.
Activities: Optional visit to a nearby community or conservation initiative
Guided interpretation of local livelihoods and tourism links
Ample downtime at the lodge and on the beach
Relaxed final evening with dinner at the lodge
10

Morning by the Sea and Departure

10–40 km depending on departure airport 30–90 minutes depending on airport and traffic
Your final morning in Diani is shaped around your departure schedule. If your flight allows, you can wake early for a last walk along the beach, watching local fishermen heading out or returning with the morning’s catch. Breakfast at the lodge is unhurried, with time to pack and prepare for travel. When it is time to leave, your driver will transfer you from the lodge back to Ukunda airstrip or to Mombasa airport for your onward flight, with appropriate buffer time for check-in and security. As you travel, you carry with you not only standout wildlife memories from the lakes and the Maasai Mara, but also the quieter moments of sea, community interaction, and the knowledge of how these different landscapes fit together into a single, coherent picture of Kenya.
