Tour Overview

This nine-day road safari traces a classic yet thoughtfully updated route through Kenya’s most iconic landscapes, linking the Great Rift Valley lakes with the wildlife-rich Maasai Mara. Travelling overland allows you to feel the country’s transitions in real time: from highland farms to acacia plains, bustling small towns to quiet conservancy tracks. Designed for small groups and families, it balances structured game viewing with enough flexibility to respond to weather, wildlife movements and your own energy levels.

You start in Nairobi, where a short briefing sets out the journey and its conservation themes. From there, you travel to Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake fringed by yellow-barked acacia trees and frequented by hippos and diverse birdlife. Boat trips, gentle walks and optional cycling in nearby Hell’s Gate offer active yet accessible ways to experience the Rift Valley’s volcanic scenery. Staying close to the lake gives you evening views of fishermen and waterbirds moving through reed-framed channels.

Continuing to Lake Nakuru National Park, you enter a compact reserve known for its rhino populations, lions and rich birdlife. Road-based game viewing here is ideal for easing guests into longer days in the vehicle, with frequent stops and varied habitat from lakeshore to wooded hills. Your guide explains the pressures on Kenya’s rhino populations and the measures taken to protect them, helping you understand how conservation decisions play out on the ground. Nights near Nakuru offer cooler air and clear stars when clouds allow.

The route then turns south-west towards the Maasai Mara, with scenery gradually opening into wider plains and scattered homesteads. Approaching the reserve, wildlife begins to appear even before you enter the gate. In the Mara itself, you spend several days exploring different areas of the park and, where possible, adjacent community conservancies. Early mornings and late afternoons are focused on game drives targeting big cats, elephants, giraffes and, seasonally, the vast herds associated with the Great Migration. Midday hours are set aside for rest in camp or lodge, with opportunities to talk with guides about ecology, culture and the realities of modern wildlife tourism.

An important dimension of this itinerary is its engagement with Maasai communities who live alongside the reserve. A carefully planned visit to a local village or community project provides context on how land use, education and tourism revenue intersect. Rather than treating culture as a performance, we aim to create space for honest conversation and mutual respect. Guests are encouraged to ask questions and reflect on what responsible safari travel means to them personally.

Overland travel brings practical benefits: you see more of everyday Kenya, and you avoid weight restrictions associated with light aircraft. It also demands clean logistics, which Expera Adventures provides through well-maintained vehicles, experienced driver-guides, and realistic driving times. Comfort stops, scenic breaks and picnic lunches are built into longer days, and the itinerary can be adapted for private groups to emphasise photography, birding or family-friendly pacing.

By the time you return to Nairobi on day nine, you have experienced Kenya as a connected system of landscapes and communities rather than a series of isolated parks. You have seen lakes that support fisheries and migratory birds, parks that protect rhinos and lions, and community lands that keep wildlife corridors open. This broader picture is what we want our guests to carry home: not just strong memories of sightings, but a clear sense of how conservation-aware travel can contribute to keeping those sightings possible for future generations.

Driving days vary, with some shorter transfers of two to three hours and a few longer legs of up to seven hours including breaks. We use well-maintained vehicles, plan comfort stops, and adapt routing to road and weather conditions to keep travel as comfortable as possible.

Yes, the mix of lakes and Mara and the presence of varied activities make it suitable for families. Younger children may need extra snacks and shorter walks, and we recommend discussing ages and interests with us so we can adjust pacing and room configurations appropriately.

The safari runs year-round, but July to October offers the highest chance of seeing the Great Migration in the Mara, while January to March often provides clear skies and excellent predator viewing. The Rift Valley lakes are productive throughout the year, with birding particularly good after rains.

We visit parks and community projects that illustrate different conservation models, employ local guides, and choose partners who demonstrate responsible practices. Guests are encouraged to engage in discussions about land use, wildlife pressures and tourism’s role, and to support vetted local initiatives if they wish.

Moderate fitness is sufficient for Hell’s Gate cycling and short walks. Activities are guided, paced gently and supported by vehicles. Guests who prefer not to walk or cycle can still enjoy the scenery from vehicles and take part in alternative, less active options.

The price covers transport, specified accommodation, most meals, park fees, guided activities and community visits. Extra costs include international flights, visas, travel insurance, drinks, gratuities, some Nairobi meals and optional add-ons such as hot air ballooning.

Yes, we can operate the same route as a private safari, allowing for customised departure dates, lodge choices and daily pacing. This is ideal for families, friends or specialist groups such as photographers who require additional flexibility.

This is your first full day dedicated to the Maasai Mara. After an early breakfast, you set out for a morning game drive, exploring different sectors of the reserve or adjacent conservancies depending on your camp’s location. Your guide looks for signs of lion, leopard and cheetah activity, as well as elephants, giraffes and a wide range of antelope. If visiting during the migration season, you may spend time along river crossings where wildebeest and zebra congregate.

A picnic breakfast or return to camp is arranged according to the day’s plan. The heat of midday is set aside for rest, pool time or conversations with guides about local ecology and culture. In the afternoon, you head out again, often focusing on predator dynamics or specific photographic opportunities. Returning to camp at dusk, you enjoy dinner and perhaps a campfire discussion under the stars.

After an early start, you might venture into a different area of the reserve or spend time tracking specific species identified the previous day. Your guide adapts routes according to recent sightings and your preferences.

Later in the day, you visit a nearby Maasai community or conservation project, arranged to minimise disruption and maximise meaningful contact. Here, you learn about land use agreements, education initiatives and daily life, and you can ask questions about the benefits and challenges of living alongside a major wildlife reserve. The visit is designed to foster understanding rather than spectacle. You return to camp for sunset and dinner, carrying new context for the landscapes you have been exploring.

The return drive retraces sections of the route but often feels different as you process the experiences of the past days. Comfort stops and lunch are included along the way.
