Mombasa & Diani Oceanfront Retreat with Safari Day
Tour Overview
Planning a special getaway from Nairobi or another part of Kenya? This six-day coastal retreat is the perfect way to rediscover the magic of Mombasa and Diani, blending familiar comforts with a touch of safari adventure.
From Mombasa you travel south to Diani Beach, a stretch of white sand regularly cited as one of Africa’s most attractive shorelines. The route itself traces coastal villages and palm-fringed bays, before you arrive at a carefully chosen boutique resort. Here, your room opens onto gardens or sea views, and the days can be as active or relaxed as you wish. Snorkelling, dhow sailing and stand-up paddling are available, but so is the simple pleasure of reading under a coconut tree while waves break on the reef. Throughout, Expera Adventures encourages low-impact choices that respect marine environments and local community norms.
Central to this itinerary is a day trip to Shimba Hills National Reserve, one of the few coastal forests in East Africa that still supports viable populations of large mammals. It lies within driving distance of Diani yet feels worlds apart, with rolling hills, deep ravines and patches of thick forest. On arrival, you trade sea breezes for cooler air scented with leaves and earth. Your guide leads game viewing in search of sable antelope, elephant and a variety of birds, explaining how forest reserves complement savannah parks in Kenya’s conservation mosaic. A short walk to a viewpoint reveals sweeping vistas back toward the coast.
Meals across the itinerary highlight fresh coastal produce and Swahili flavours, from spiced seafood stews to coconut-rich vegetarian dishes. You have opportunities to visit local markets, try street snacks with guidance, and dine at selected restaurants committed to responsible sourcing. If you are travelling as a couple, sunset dhow cruises and private beach dinners can be arranged; families may prefer sandcastle sessions, safe lagoon swimming and informal village visits where children can see how life is lived away from resorts.
By combining two distinct coastal bases with a nearby safari day, this trip offers variety without the exhaustion of constant movement. The initial days in Mombasa gently orient you to Kenya and its coast, while Diani provides space to truly unwind. Shimba Hills offers just enough wildlife and scenery to satisfy curiosity or bridge the gap for travellers who will later visit larger parks. For guests who have limited time or prefer to avoid long internal flights, it is an accessible way to experience different facets of the country.
Expera Adventures manages the practical details quietly in the background: private road transfers, vetted accommodation, and knowledgeable local guides who understand both international expectations and local realities. You benefit from honest advice on where and when to swim, how to support community enterprises meaningfully, and which optional excursions offer real value rather than gimmicks. The result is a holiday that feels both premium and grounded, offering comfort, beauty and a clear sense of place.
At the end of six days, you leave with the memory of floating in warm, clear water, listening to calls to prayer drift across Mombasa’s harbour, and watching forest mist lift over Shimba Hills. More importantly, you have gained a practical understanding of how Kenya’s coast functions environmentally and culturally, and how thoughtful travel can help keep its reefs, beaches and forests intact for those who come after you.
Tour Highlights
Planning your trip from Kenya
The journey begins in historic Mombasa. While you may have visited before, our expert local guide will bring the layered history of the Old Town and Fort Jesus to life in a way that self-guided tours rarely can. You'll stay at a premium hotel overlooking the ocean, allowing you to experience the city's unique pulse before we handle all the arrangements for your scenic transfer south to Diani Beach, a stretch of coastline we all know and love for its pristine white sands and turquoise waters.
In Diani, we've selected a boutique resort that offers a more intimate and refined atmosphere than many larger hotels. Here, the focus is on true relaxation and connection with the environment. Your days are your own to fill, whether with snorkelling on the reef, enjoying a quiet dhow sail, or simply relaxing by the pool. The highlight for many is the included day trip to Shimba Hills National Reserve. It's a fantastic, easy way to experience a different ecosystem, home to the rare sable antelope and coastal elephant populations, without the long travel time associated with upcountry safaris. We take care of the vehicle, the guide, and the park entry, so you can simply enjoy the cool forest air and stunning views.
Throughout the trip, you'll savour authentic Swahili cuisine, from fresh seafood to coconut-infused dishes, at carefully chosen spots that champion local produce. We believe that even for domestic travellers, having every detail managed—from the private vehicle transfers to the pre-vetted guides and accommodation—is the ultimate luxury. It transforms a standard coastal trip into a truly memorable retreat, allowing you to see familiar places with fresh eyes and return home completely rejuvenated.
Visa & Entry
As a Kenyan citizen or resident travelling domestically, no visa is required. You will only need a valid form of identification, such as a National ID card or passport, for any domestic flights and hotel check-ins.
Flights & Connections
Getting to the coast is straightforward. Regular daily flights operate from Nairobi's JKIA and Wilson Airport to Mombasa (MBA) and Diani's Ukunda airstrip (UKA), with a flight time of about one hour. Alternatively, the SGR train offers a scenic and comfortable journey from Nairobi to Mombasa in approximately 5-6 hours.
Health, Climate & Packing
While you're familiar with Kenya's climate, remember the coast is typically hot and humid year-round. Pack light clothing, swimwear, and sun protection. Malaria is present at the coast, so it's wise to take precautions like using insect repellent, especially at dawn and dusk. For the Shimba Hills trip, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
Money, Time & Culture
You'll be using the Kenyan Shilling (KES), and M-Pesa is widely accepted alongside credit cards and cash. Our tour price is quoted in USD for consistency but is payable in KES at the current exchange rate. Naturally, there is no time zone difference, and you'll be using the standard Type G (UK-style) plug sockets.
Resident Rates
As a Kenyan citizen or East African resident, you may be eligible for preferential rates at parks and some accommodations. Our final quote will automatically incorporate any applicable resident discounts.
Self-Drive Option
While this itinerary includes all private road transfers for a stress-free experience, we can customize the package and price if you prefer to self-drive to the coast.
Guidance only — confirm visa, entry and health requirements with the official embassy or eVisa portal before you travel.
