Coastal & Savannah Harmony: Mara to Diani
Tour Overview
Swapping the familiar canals of the Netherlands for Kenya's vast savannahs offers a journey of incredible contrasts. This 5-day adventure provides a seamless, premium taste of Africa's most iconic landscapes, made easy with direct flights from Amsterdam.
This signature Expera Adventures journey is crafted for travelers who want to feel Kenya’s wild savannah and Indian Ocean coast in a single, effortless sweep. From the moment you land in Nairobi, every transfer, flight and lodge has been curated to remove friction, maximize time in nature and keep your footprint light. It’s ideal for couples, families or small groups who value comfort, thoughtful guiding and a quiet respect for the places they visit. Your adventure opens in Nairobi, where a dedicated Expera representative welcomes you, assists with formalities and shares a brief orientation to Kenya’s landscapes and conservation story. Depending on your arrival time, you may have the option to visit a wildlife or cultural initiative that Expera supports, or simply rest at a well-located city hotel. This short pause allows you to reset from international travel and prepare for the immersion that follows. You then board a scenic flight into the Maasai Mara, descending over a patchwork of acacia-dotted plains and winding rivers. For the next days, your base is a carefully chosen tented camp or lodge that blends comfort with a genuine sense of place. Game drives take place in the early morning and late afternoon when wildlife is most active and light is gentle for photography. Your guide focuses not only on the famous big cats and plains game, but also on the smaller interactions that bring the ecosystem to life: courting birds, busy dung beetles, and the quiet rhythm of Maasai livestock moving on community lands at the reserve edge. Evenings in the Mara are intentionally unhurried. You might enjoy sundowners overlooking the plains, a campfire conversation about local conservation challenges, or a private dinner under the stars. Expera partners with properties that actively support wildlife corridors, anti-poaching initiatives or community-driven tourism, and your stay contributes directly to those projects. There is flexibility built into the program to adapt to your interests: focus on photography, track specific species, or take time to simply sit and listen to the bush. From the savannah you transition south to the coast on a scheduled flight route that minimizes backtracking and long drives. On arrival at Ukunda airstrip, the air turns humid and salt-laden, and towering palms signal your move into a different ecosystem. Diani Beach offers powder-soft white sand, turquoise shallows and coral-rich waters, and your oceanfront resort has been selected for its quieter ambience, quality of service and commitment to responsible coastal practices such as reef protection and reduced single-use plastics. Your days on the coast are intentionally open. Walk the beach at sunrise as fishermen return with their overnight catch, explore tidal pools and mangroves with a local guide, or head out on a snorkeling excursion with operators who respect the reef’s limits. The resort’s pool, spa and shaded lounges invite slow time between activities, and the cuisine showcases fresh seafood and tropical produce with options for different dietary preferences. For families, optional add-ons like a dhow cruise or gentle camel rides can be included without compromising safety or cultural sensitivity. Throughout the journey, Expera manages all logistics and confirmations behind the scenes so that your days flow smoothly from city to savannah to sea. Transport is operated by reputable aviation and ground partners, and vehicles used on game drives adhere to strict maintenance and guiding standards. The itinerary can be tailored for different lengths or levels of privacy, including private charter legs or exclusive-use safari vehicles upon request. The result is a balanced, premium experience that offers enough structure to feel secure and enough flexibility to feel personal – a quiet harmony between Kenya’s iconic landscapes and your own pace of travel. This Mara-to-Diani circuit suits both first-time visitors and those returning to Kenya who want to revisit familiar places with deeper context. By linking two high-demand regions with a conservation-aware lens, it creates an accessible yet elevated way to understand the connections between inland wildlife habitats and coastal ecosystems, and how tourism choices can support both. It’s an experience designed not only to be memorable now, but also to leave you with a clearer sense of how this remarkable country is working to protect its natural heritage for generations to come.
Tour Highlights
Planning your trip from Netherlands
Your adventure begins in Nairobi, where our team will welcome you after your direct flight from Amsterdam. This initial pause allows you to acclimate and reset before diving into the wilderness. The next morning, a scenic flight carries you over the Great Rift Valley and into the Maasai Mara, a landscape that feels a world away from the structured polders of home. Here, your base is a carefully selected luxury tented camp, offering an intimate connection to the wild without sacrificing comfort. Your expert guides lead early morning and late afternoon game drives, timing them for when the animals are most active and the light is perfect for photography. The focus is not just on spotting the 'Big Five', but on understanding the intricate web of life that makes this ecosystem so special.
Evenings are a highlight, a time for unwinding with a classic safari sundowner as the sun sets over the plains, followed by dinner under a canopy of stars you can rarely see from back home. Your stay directly contributes to vital local conservation and community projects, adding a layer of purpose to your journey.
From the savannah, another flight whisks you to the coast. The air shifts from dry and earthy to warm and salt-tinged as you arrive in Diani. Your beachfront resort is a sanctuary of white sand and turquoise water, chosen for its tranquil atmosphere and commitment to protecting the fragile marine environment. Your time here is unstructured by design. You can explore the coral reefs on a snorkeling trip, walk along the pristine beach, or simply relax by the pool. It's the perfect, gentle conclusion to the exhilarating pace of the safari.
Throughout this 5-day trip, every logistical detail—from the airport transfers to the bush flights and lodge reservations—is managed by us. This allows you to immerse yourself fully in the experience, creating a truly restful and inspiring Kenyan holiday that is as efficient as it is unforgettable.
Visa & Entry
Dutch passport holders are required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) online before traveling to Kenya. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of arrival and contain at least one blank page for stamps. We strongly advise applying through the official Government of Kenya eTA portal well in advance of your departure from the Netherlands and confirming the latest entry requirements.
Flights & Connections
Getting to Kenya from the Netherlands is remarkably straightforward. Both KLM and Kenya Airways operate daily direct flights from Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) to Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO). The flight duration is approximately 8 to 9 hours, making for a comfortable and efficient start to your safari.
Health, Climate & Packing
We recommend consulting your local GGD or GP at least six weeks before your trip for personalised health advice, including any recommended vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis. You'll be trading the temperate Dutch climate for Kenya's warm equatorial sun, so pack lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral safari colours. However, also include a warm fleece or jacket, as morning game drives in the Mara can be surprisingly chilly, especially if you're travelling during the Dutch winter.
Money, Time & Culture
Kenya's currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES), but US Dollars are widely accepted for tips and at lodges. Major credit cards are accepted at all our partner properties, but it's wise to have some cash. Kenya is typically one or two hours ahead of the Netherlands, so jet lag is minimal. Remember to bring a Type G (UK-style) plug adapter, as it differs from the Type F used in Holland. A friendly 'Jambo!' (hello) is always warmly received.
Tipping Guidance
Tipping is a customary way to show appreciation for excellent service in Kenya. We can provide you with suggested guidelines, and it's helpful to carry smaller US dollar bills or Kenyan Shillings for gratuities for your guides, drivers, and camp staff.
Connectivity
Wi-Fi is available at the lodges and resorts but can be slower than you're used to. For more reliable internet, you can easily purchase a local SIM card upon arrival in Nairobi or arrange an eSIM online before leaving the Netherlands.
Guidance only — confirm visa, entry and health requirements with the official embassy or eVisa portal before you travel.
