Diani Sands & Tsavo Two-Worlds Journey
Tour Overview
Ready to trade the flat landscapes and North Sea breeze of the Netherlands for Kenya's sun-drenched coast and wild savannahs? This five-day journey is the perfect blend of beachfront relaxation and classic safari adventure.
This five-day journey has been created for travellers who want both an Indian Ocean retreat and an authentic Kenyan safari without rushing between regions. It begins and ends on the white sands of Diani Beach, where warm turquoise waters meet coastal forest, and blends seamlessly into a two-park exploration of Tsavo East and Tsavo West. Each step has been designed with comfort, practicality and conservation in mind, using road transfers that follow logical routes and lodges that prioritise both service and sustainability. Your time in Diani is deliberately unhurried. After arrival at Ukunda Airstrip or by road from Mombasa, you are transferred to a carefully selected beachfront hotel or boutique lodge, where you can decompress from travel with a swim, a walk on the beach or a quiet drink as the sun sets over the palms. The focus here is on the quieter, more natural side of the coast: rooms that open to sea breeze rather than loud nightlife, and properties that work actively to reduce plastic waste and protect the fragile marine environment. Optional activities, from guided reef walks to low-impact dhow cruises and responsible snorkelling, allow you to enjoy the ocean without placing pressure on coral or marine life. From Diani, you travel inland towards Tsavo East, watching the landscape transition from coastal greenery to open scrub and red-earth plains. Tsavo East is one of Kenya’s largest and wildest national parks, known for its big skies, red-dusted elephants and a strong sense of space. Here you settle into a lodge that combines comfort with a front-row seat to wildlife, often overlooking a waterhole or river where animals come to drink. Game drives focus on tracking elephants, lions, giraffes and the park’s rich birdlife, while your guide introduces you to the park’s complex history and current conservation efforts, including challenges posed by human-wildlife conflict along its boundaries. The next stage of your journey takes you across to Tsavo West, a park defined by dramatic lava flows, rugged hills and natural springs. The drive itself acts as an extended game drive, and by the time you arrive at your next lodge you have traced a subtle shift in ecology and scenery. Tsavo West offers excellent chances of seeing rhino in protected areas, hippos at crystal-clear Mzima Springs and striking views of Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days. Your lodge has been chosen for its vantage point and its environmental credentials, making use of solar energy and water conservation techniques to reduce its footprint in this fragile semi-arid landscape. Throughout the safari days, you travel in a private 4x4 with a professional guide, allowing for flexibility in timing, longer stops at sightings and unhurried photography. Drives generally take place in the early mornings and late afternoons when wildlife is most active, returning to camp for relaxed lunches and time to swim or rest during the heat of the day. Evenings often bring animals close to the lodges’ waterholes, meaning the safari never really stops even when you are back in camp. Discussions with staff and guides help illuminate how tourism revenue from visits like yours supports anti-poaching patrols, habitat management and local community projects. On your final day, you travel from Tsavo West back to Nairobi, crossing a landscape that few visitors see in such detail. The timing is planned to suit onward flights or additional nights in the capital. In just five days, you will have felt the contrast between the Kenyan coast and the interior, slept to the sound of waves and then of distant lions, and experienced two distinct but interconnected ecosystems. The itinerary is highly adaptable: extra nights can be added at the beach or in either park, and we can include charter flights for guests who prefer to reduce road distances while still keeping a close connection to the landscapes you have come to experience. Expera Adventures handles all logistics, ensuring that transfers are punctual, park fees are correctly managed and your preferences are communicated to each lodge before arrival. The tone of the trip is relaxed rather than regimented, with plenty of space for personal time and tailored activities, but underpinned by expert planning and a consistent conservation-aware ethos. It is an ideal choice for couples, friends or families seeking a balanced introduction to Kenya’s coast and savannah, with a premium feel and a clear sense of purpose behind every day.
Tour Highlights
Planning your trip from Netherlands
Your time in Diani is for pure relaxation and acclimatisation. The focus is on pristine white sands, quiet boutique properties, and sustainable enjoyment of the marine environment. It's a chance to simply read a book under a palm tree, take long walks along the shore, or opt for a gentle dhow cruise at sunset. For many Dutch travellers accustomed to meticulously planned holidays, this unstructured time offers a welcome moment to simply breathe and absorb the tropical atmosphere before the adventure begins.
From the coast, your private 4x4 safari vehicle takes you inland. The journey itself is a highlight, as you watch the lush greenery give way to the vast, red-earth plains of Tsavo East. The sheer scale of the landscape, with its endless horizons, provides a dramatic contrast to the Netherlands. Tsavo East is renowned for its large herds of 'red' elephants, coloured by the dust they spray on themselves, and your guide will be an expert at tracking them, along with lions, giraffes, and an incredible diversity of birds.
Next, you'll cross into Tsavo West, a park of dramatic contrasts with volcanic hills, lava flows, and the life-giving Mzima Springs. Here, you can see hippos swimming in crystal-clear water and, on a clear day, enjoy stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro in neighbouring Tanzania. Your lodges in both parks are chosen for their spectacular locations, often overlooking waterholes where wildlife gathers, allowing you to continue your safari from the comfort of your verandah. These lodges are also committed to conservation, ensuring your visit directly supports the protection of these wild spaces.
On the final day, you’ll journey back to Nairobi for your onward flight, filled with memories of two distinct Kenyan worlds. This itinerary perfectly balances the desire for a relaxing beach holiday with an authentic, comfortable safari, making that long-haul flight from Europe feel entirely worthwhile.
Visa & Entry
As a citizen of the Netherlands, you will need to apply online for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before your trip to Kenya. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of entry and have at least one blank page. We strongly advise checking the latest requirements and applying through the official Government of Kenya eTA portal well in advance of your departure.
Flights & Connections
Flying from Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport (AMS) is very convenient, with KLM offering direct flights to Nairobi (NBO), taking around 8 to 9 hours. From Nairobi, a short domestic flight or pre-arranged road transfer connects you to the coast to begin your tour. Alternative routes may involve a single layover in a European or Middle Eastern hub.
Health, Climate & Packing
Please consult your GP or a GGD travel clinic well before your trip regarding recommended vaccinations and malaria prevention for Kenya's coastal and safari regions. You'll be swapping the temperate Dutch climate for Kenya's tropical heat, so pack lightweight, breathable clothing, swimwear, and strong sun protection. Remember to also bring a fleece or warm jacket, as early morning game drives can be surprisingly cool before the sun fully rises.
Money, Time & Culture
The local currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). While credit cards are accepted at lodges and hotels, carrying some cash is useful for small purchases and tips. Kenya is one or two hours ahead of the Netherlands, depending on daylight saving, making for an easy adjustment. Remember to pack a Type G (UK-style) three-pin plug adapter for your electronic devices.
English Widely Spoken
Your fluency in English will make communication effortless. English is an official language in Kenya, and all our guides and lodge staff are fluent, ensuring a smooth and engaging experience.
Tipping Customs
While not mandatory, tipping for good service is a customary and appreciated practice in Kenya. We recommend tipping your safari guide, lodge staff, and restaurant servers, usually in Kenyan Shillings or US dollars at the end of your stay or service.
Guidance only — confirm visa, entry and health requirements with the official embassy or eVisa portal before you travel.
