Tour Overview

After the long journey from New Zealand, this fly-in safari ensures you spend less time on the road and more time immersed in the incredible wildlife of the Masai Mara.

This short but immersive Masai Mara fly-in safari is designed for travellers who value time, comfort and meaningful wildlife encounters. By flying directly into the reserve from Nairobi, you avoid long transfer days and arrive rested and ready for your first game drive in one of Africa’s most productive wildlife ecosystems. From the air, the patchwork of acacia-dotted plains and meandering rivers offers your first hint of the vastness you are about to explore. Upon landing, your private guide and vehicle are waiting at the airstrip. Over the next two days, you will follow fresh tracks at dawn, scan riverbanks for big cats and elephants, and linger at sightings without pressure to rush. Expera Adventures works with a curated collection of intimate camps set in wildlife-rich private conservancies or quieter corners of the reserve, where off-the-beaten-track routes and fewer vehicles create a more authentic, low-impact experience. Your tent or suite balances understated luxury with environmental responsibility, often using solar power and water-saving systems, so your comfort supports conservation rather than competing with it. Game drives are kept flexible and personalised. Early mornings often begin with a gentle wake-up, coffee delivered to your veranda, and the soundtrack of the bush before sunrise. You then head out in an open or large-windowed 4x4, guided by a professional who understands both the land and the behaviour of its animals. This is prime Big Five country, but your guide will also introduce you to the smaller stories of the savannah: the social world of zebras, the engineering of termite mounds, and the subtle signs that reveal predators nearby. When conditions allow, you may stay out through mid-morning with a picnic breakfast, maximising time on the plains. Afternoons are deliberately slower. After a fresh, locally inspired lunch and a few leisurely hours to swim, read, or simply watch wildlife passing near camp, you set out for an extended sunset drive. This is often the best time to see lions becoming active, hippos emerging from rivers, and elephants lazily crossing open ground in golden light. Sundowner drinks in a scenic spot are a highlight, and your guide will find a quiet location where you can absorb the scale and silence of the Mara with minimal disturbance to wildlife. Throughout your stay, there is a gentle but consistent emphasis on conservation. Many of the camps we use contribute bed-night levies directly to habitat protection and anti-poaching initiatives, and they partner with local Maasai communities through employment, education and grazing agreements that keep wildlife corridors intact. You will have the chance to hear these stories first-hand, either from camp staff or, subject to timing and interest, during an informal visit to a nearby community project that prioritises dignity and mutual learning over performance. On your final morning, you can opt for one last early game drive or enjoy a relaxed breakfast overlooking the plains before your short flight back to Nairobi. The timing works well for onward connections to the Kenya Coast, making this an ideal safari component paired with time in Diani, Watamu or Malindi. In just three days, you will have experienced a concentrated, high-quality safari that respects both your schedule and the landscape that makes the Masai Mara one of Africa’s greatest wildlife destinations. This itinerary is fully customisable. We can add extra nights in the Mara, arrange a private vehicle for ultimate flexibility, include a sunrise hot-air balloon flight, or connect you directly on to coastal beaches or other Kenyan parks such as Amboseli or Samburu. With Expera Adventures, you are not choosing an off-the-shelf package, but a crafted introduction to East Africa’s wild heart, delivered with professional guiding, reliable logistics, and a clear commitment to conservation-aware travel.

Planning your trip from New Zealand

Making the trip to Africa from New Zealand is a significant adventure, and the Mara Big Five Fly-In Escape is designed to honour that investment of time and travel. We understand that after more than a day in the air, the last thing you want is a long, bumpy road transfer. That's why this itinerary flies you directly from Nairobi into the heart of the Masai Mara, transforming a travel day into an incredible scenic flight over the Great Rift Valley, arriving rested and ready for your first game drive.

From the moment you touch down on the bush airstrip, the experience is seamless. Your private guide, an expert in the local ecosystem, will be waiting to welcome you. This isn't a rushed, box-ticking tour; it's a deep dive into one of the planet's most celebrated wildlife havens. For Kiwis who appreciate wide-open spaces and pristine nature, the sheer scale of the Mara will feel both familiar and breathtakingly new. Over two full days, your game drives are flexible, following the rhythm of the animals, not a rigid schedule. We'll track lions in the golden morning light, watch elephant herds move across the plains, and wait patiently for a leopard to descend from its treetop perch.

Your accommodation is a core part of the experience. We partner with intimate, eco-conscious camps that blend understated luxury with a genuine commitment to conservation—a value we know resonates deeply with New Zealanders. These camps are often located in private conservancies, which means fewer vehicles and more exclusive sightings. They operate on solar power, practice water conservation, and invest directly back into the Maasai communities and wildlife protection initiatives that sustain this landscape. You'll enjoy exceptional comfort and cuisine, knowing your stay is making a positive impact.

Think of this as the ultimate safari 'starter pack'. Its three-day duration makes it a perfect, high-impact beginning to a longer African journey or an incredible standalone experience if you're short on time. It can be easily combined with a relaxing week on the white-sand beaches of the Kenya Coast, creating a classic 'bush and beach' holiday. This escape is about quality over quantity, delivering the quintessential Masai Mara experience efficiently and elegantly, ensuring your long-haul journey is rewarded with unforgettable memories.

Visa & Entry

New Zealand passport holders require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) to enter Kenya, which must be applied for online before your departure. Your passport should have at least six months of validity from your planned date of entry and a minimum of one blank page. Always check the latest requirements and apply through the official Government of Kenya eTA portal well in advance of your travel.

Flights & Connections

There are no direct flights from New Zealand to Kenya. The most common and efficient routes from Auckland (AKL) involve a single stop in the Middle East, typically flying with Emirates via Dubai (DXB) or Qatar Airways via Doha (DOH). Total travel time, including the layover, is usually between 24 and 30 hours to reach Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO).

Health, Climate & Packing

We recommend you consult your GP or a travel medicine clinic at least 6-8 weeks before your trip for advice on vaccinations and malaria prevention, which is recommended for the Masai Mara. Coming from New Zealand's distinct seasons, you'll find Kenya's equatorial climate consistently warm. Pack lightweight clothing, but don't forget a warm fleece or jacket, as morning game drives before sunrise can be surprisingly chilly. Essential items include a sunhat, sunglasses, strong sunscreen, and insect repellent.

Money, Time & Culture

Kenya's currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES), but US Dollars (USD) printed after 2009 are widely accepted for tourist services and tipping. Major credit cards are accepted at lodges, but it's wise to have cash for smaller purchases. Kenya is 9 hours behind New Zealand Standard Time (and 10 hours behind during NZ Daylight Time). The power sockets are Type G, the three-pin British style, so you will need an adapter for your Kiwi devices.

Tipping Culture

Unlike in New Zealand, tipping is a customary and appreciated practice for good service in Kenya. We provide guidelines, but typically you would tip your safari guide at the end of the trip and leave a separate tip for general camp staff in a communal box.

Connectivity

Wi-Fi is available in the main areas of most safari camps but can be slow and is often not available in the rooms. For more reliable connectivity, you can purchase an eSIM before you travel or a local SIM card upon arrival at Nairobi's airport.

Travel Advisories

Before you travel, we recommend checking the latest travel advice for Kenya on the New Zealand government's SafeTravel website for the most up-to-date information on safety and security.

Guidance only — confirm visa, entry and health requirements with the official embassy or eVisa portal before you travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Absolutely. It's designed as a high-impact experience that maximizes wildlife viewing by flying you directly into the Mara. It's a perfect, unforgettable introduction to Africa and can be easily combined with a longer itinerary in Kenya or Tanzania to make the most of your journey.

Your winter (June to August) is an excellent time to visit, as it aligns with Kenya's dry season and the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Mara. Your summer (December to February) is also a fantastic time, as it's Kenya's hot-dry season with lush green landscapes and many newborn animals.

It's best to have a mix. Major credit cards are fine for the lodge bill, but you will need cash for tips and small purchases. We recommend bringing clean, recent-issue US Dollar notes from New Zealand, as NZD cannot be exchanged easily in Kenya.

Kenya uses the Type G plug with three rectangular pins, the same as the UK. You will need to bring a travel adapter, as this is different from the Type I plugs used in New Zealand.
