Tour Overview

After the long-haul journey from New Zealand, imagine being whisked from Nairobi straight into the heart of the Maasai Mara, swapping travel fatigue for thrilling wildlife encounters within hours of your arrival.

This five-day journey has been designed for travellers who want Kenya’s classic wildlife and coast experience without compromising on comfort or time. It combines a fly-in Maasai Mara safari with a refined stay on Diani’s powder-soft sands, allowing you to move effortlessly from big cat country to the Indian Ocean in a matter of hours, not days.

Your adventure begins in Nairobi, where a dedicated meet-and-greet team assists you from the moment you land. After a short transfer to Wilson Airport, you board a light aircraft bound for the Maasai Mara. The city falls away quickly, replaced by patchwork farms and finally by the rolling acacia-dotted plains that have come to define the safari dream. By the time you touch down at the bush airstrip, your safari vehicle is waiting, chilled refreshments at hand, ready to turn your transfer into your first game drive.

In the Mara, you spend two nights at an intimate, well-situated tented camp inside or adjacent to the main reserve, in a wildlife-rich sector chosen for predator activity and open landscapes. Spacious canvas suites with proper beds, ensuite bathrooms and hot showers create a sense of classic safari, while solar power and careful water use reflect a modern conservation ethic. You head out at first light and late afternoon when the animals are at their most active, and at night you fall asleep to a chorus of distant lion calls and the rustle of the savannah.

Game drives are unhurried and interpretive rather than box-ticking. Your professional guide tracks big cats along the riverbanks, follows elephant herds as they move between grazing grounds, and pauses patiently with you at cheetah sightings rather than rushing to the next vehicle cluster. Between drives you return to camp for freshly prepared meals, time by the pool, and perhaps a short guided walk around camp to learn more about plants, tracks and the smaller creatures that underpin the ecosystem.

On day three you take to the skies once more, flying via Nairobi or direct to Ukunda Airstrip. As you descend, the Mara’s golden grasslands give way to turquoise lagoons, coral reefs and long, empty beaches. A short road transfer takes you to your beach retreat, a boutique property on Diani’s quieter stretch, where palm-fringed gardens lead you down to the sand. Here the days move to a gentler rhythm: breakfast on an ocean-facing terrace, leisurely swims, spa treatments and sunset walks along the tideline.

While the focus at the coast is relaxation, there is plenty to do if you wish. You might opt for a half-day dhow excursion in search of dolphins, a guided snorkelling trip over the reef or a reef walk at low tide with a local marine guide. Back at the lodge, you can simply enjoy warm Indian Ocean breezes, fresh seafood and a carefully curated drinks list. The final morning offers time for one last swim before your transfer to Ukunda Airstrip and your flight back to Nairobi, where your onward arrangements begin.

Throughout the journey, the logistics are designed to remove friction: scheduled flights minimize long road transfers, private vehicle safaris keep game viewing exclusive, and your properties are chosen for reliable service and consistent quality. Expera Adventures also partners with camps and lodges that contribute to local conservancies and community projects, ensuring that your stay supports sustainable land use, wildlife protection and livelihoods in both the Mara and along the coast.

This itinerary is ideal for first-time visitors seeking a high-quality introduction to Kenya, couples wanting a short but indulgent break, or business travellers looking to add a curated mini-safari and beach stay to a regional trip. It can also be tailored with extra nights in either the Mara or Diani, or upgraded with a hot air balloon flight or private catamaran charter, to match the pace and level of exclusivity you prefer.

Planning your trip from New Zealand

This five-day fly-in safari is perfectly designed for the Kiwi traveller who wants to maximise every moment in Africa. We understand that getting to Kenya is a significant undertaking, so this itinerary bypasses long, bumpy road transfers, using light aircraft to connect you seamlessly from the legendary plains of the Maasai Mara to the pristine shores of Diani Beach.

Your adventure starts the moment you land in Nairobi. Our team meets you and assists with your short hop to Wilson Airport for your scenic flight into the Mara. As you leave the city behind, you'll look down upon the vast Great Rift Valley, a dramatic landscape that gives way to the iconic acacia-dotted savannah you've dreamed of. Upon landing on a bush airstrip, your safari guide will be waiting, ready to begin your first game drive en route to your intimate tented camp.

For two nights, the Mara is your home. Far from a simple tent, your spacious canvas suite features a proper bed, an ensuite bathroom with a hot shower, and a private verandah. It’s the classic safari experience, blending rustic charm with modern comfort. Game drives are timed for when the animals are most active—early mornings and late afternoons. Your guide, an expert in the local ecosystem, will help you track prides of lions, find a leopard lounging in a sausage tree, and watch elephant families move across the plains. It's a world away from the familiar landscapes of Aotearoa.

On day three, you'll trade the savannah for the sea. Another flight carries you over the heart of Kenya to the coast, where the turquoise Indian Ocean comes into view. Your boutique beach hotel is a sanctuary on a quiet stretch of Diani's famous white sand. After the dusty plains and early safari starts, this is your time to unwind. The rhythm slows, governed by the tides. Enjoy fresh seafood, swim in the warm ocean water—a different world from the chilly Pacific—and perhaps take a traditional dhow boat out to spot dolphins and snorkel over the coral reefs.

This trip packages Kenya's two greatest highlights—wildlife and coast—into a short, high-quality escape. It’s an ideal way to experience the magic of East Africa without spending weeks away from home, perfect for busy professionals, couples, or as a spectacular add-on to a business trip. By choosing this tour, you're also supporting camps and lodges that are deeply committed to conservation and community upliftment, ensuring your incredible Kenyan holiday has a positive impact.

Visa & Entry

New Zealand passport holders require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) to enter Kenya, which should be applied for online before your departure. Your passport must have at least six months of validity remaining from your date of entry and at least one blank page. We strongly advise confirming the latest requirements and applying through the official Government of Kenya eTA portal.

Flights & Connections

The journey from New Zealand to Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) is a long-haul trip involving at least one stop. Common and efficient routes from Auckland (AKL) are via Middle Eastern hubs like Dubai (DXB) with Emirates or Doha (DOH) with Qatar Airways. Expect a total travel time, including layovers, of 24 to 30 hours.

Health, Climate & Packing

Consult your GP or a travel medicine clinic well in advance for personalised advice on vaccinations, such as yellow fever, and malaria prevention, which is recommended for coastal areas like Diani. If you travel during the New Zealand winter (June-August), you'll be arriving in Kenya's stunning dry season—warm, sunny days perfect for safari. Pack lightweight clothing, but also include a warm fleece or jacket, as morning game drives in the Mara can be surprisingly crisp, similar to an early morning in Canterbury.

Money, Time & Culture

Kenya's currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES), but US Dollars are widely accepted for tourist services. Credit cards are accepted at all the lodges on this trip, so you won't need much cash. Kenya is 9 hours behind New Zealand Standard Time (10 hours during NZ daylight saving). The power sockets are Type G, the three-pin rectangular plug common in the UK, so you will need an adapter for your Kiwi devices.

Tipping Customs

Tipping is customary for good service and is greatly appreciated, though not mandatory. We suggest around US$10-15 per person per day for your safari guide and similar amounts for the general staff at your camp or lodge, usually placed in a communal box.

Staying Connected

While Wi-Fi is available in the camps and lodges, it can be intermittent in remote areas. For reliable data, consider purchasing an eSIM for Kenya before you leave New Zealand, which allows for easy and affordable connectivity upon arrival.

Guidance only — confirm visa, entry and health requirements with the official embassy or eVisa portal before you travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Including a layover in a hub like Dubai or Doha, you should plan for a total travel time of 24 to 30 hours from Auckland to Nairobi. It's a long journey, which is why a fly-in safari is a great way to start your holiday without more long drives.

Absolutely. New Zealand's winter (June to August) coincides with Kenya's peak dry season. This means pleasant weather, less vegetation for clearer wildlife viewing, and it's when the Great Migration is typically in the Maasai Mara.

You don't need a traditional visa, but you must apply online for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before you travel. It's a straightforward process, but ensure you do it on the official government website.

Your NZ bank cards (Visa/Mastercard) will work at ATMs in Nairobi and can be used for payment at the lodges. However, you cannot use New Zealand Dollars directly. We recommend carrying some US Dollars for tips and using your card for larger payments.

Yes, they are very safe. These scheduled light aircraft services are the standard for travel between safari camps in Kenya and are operated by reputable airlines with experienced pilots who specialise in flying in these conditions.

This journey operates year-round, with wildlife viewing in the Mara consistently strong from July to October during the migration and excellent resident game outside those months. Diani is warm throughout the year, with calmer seas typically from December to March and July to October.

By using scheduled light aircraft, the total air time is around two to three hours with a connection in Nairobi, plus short transfers to and from the airstrips, which keeps transit time low and maximises your time on safari and at the coast.

Children are welcome at many of our partner camps and beach lodges, but some have minimum age limits for game drives or specific room types. We recommend this itinerary for families with children aged six and above so that they can fully enjoy the safari experience.

The trip is rated easy, as most activities involve game drives and relaxed beach time. You should be comfortable climbing into a 4x4 and walking on uneven ground around camp and on the beach, but no strenuous hiking is required unless you request additional activities.

The package covers domestic flights, lodges, most meals, park fees, game drives and transfers. You will pay separately for items such as premium drinks, some lunches at the coast, optional activities, spa treatments, gratuities and any personal shopping.

Yes, we can extend your stay in either the Maasai Mara or Diani, upgrade camps or lodges, or add time in Nairobi before or after the trip to match your pace, interests and flight schedule.

Both the Mara and Diani lie in areas where malaria can occur, so many travellers choose to take prophylactic medication on the advice of their doctor. Routine travel vaccinations are also recommended; please consult your health provider well before departure.
