Diani Sands & Tsavo Two-Worlds Journey
Tour Overview
For our neighbours in Rwanda, Kenya's iconic coastline and vast wilderness are just a short and easy journey away, offering a perfect contrast to the beautiful landscapes you know at home.
This five-day journey has been created for travellers who want both an Indian Ocean retreat and an authentic Kenyan safari without rushing between regions. It begins and ends on the white sands of Diani Beach, where warm turquoise waters meet coastal forest, and blends seamlessly into a two-park exploration of Tsavo East and Tsavo West. Each step has been designed with comfort, practicality and conservation in mind, using road transfers that follow logical routes and lodges that prioritise both service and sustainability. Your time in Diani is deliberately unhurried. After arrival at Ukunda Airstrip or by road from Mombasa, you are transferred to a carefully selected beachfront hotel or boutique lodge, where you can decompress from travel with a swim, a walk on the beach or a quiet drink as the sun sets over the palms. The focus here is on the quieter, more natural side of the coast: rooms that open to sea breeze rather than loud nightlife, and properties that work actively to reduce plastic waste and protect the fragile marine environment. Optional activities, from guided reef walks to low-impact dhow cruises and responsible snorkelling, allow you to enjoy the ocean without placing pressure on coral or marine life. From Diani, you travel inland towards Tsavo East, watching the landscape transition from coastal greenery to open scrub and red-earth plains. Tsavo East is one of Kenya’s largest and wildest national parks, known for its big skies, red-dusted elephants and a strong sense of space. Here you settle into a lodge that combines comfort with a front-row seat to wildlife, often overlooking a waterhole or river where animals come to drink. Game drives focus on tracking elephants, lions, giraffes and the park’s rich birdlife, while your guide introduces you to the park’s complex history and current conservation efforts, including challenges posed by human-wildlife conflict along its boundaries. The next stage of your journey takes you across to Tsavo West, a park defined by dramatic lava flows, rugged hills and natural springs. The drive itself acts as an extended game drive, and by the time you arrive at your next lodge you have traced a subtle shift in ecology and scenery. Tsavo West offers excellent chances of seeing rhino in protected areas, hippos at crystal-clear Mzima Springs and striking views of Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days. Your lodge has been chosen for its vantage point and its environmental credentials, making use of solar energy and water conservation techniques to reduce its footprint in this fragile semi-arid landscape. Throughout the safari days, you travel in a private 4x4 with a professional guide, allowing for flexibility in timing, longer stops at sightings and unhurried photography. Drives generally take place in the early mornings and late afternoons when wildlife is most active, returning to camp for relaxed lunches and time to swim or rest during the heat of the day. Evenings often bring animals close to the lodges’ waterholes, meaning the safari never really stops even when you are back in camp. Discussions with staff and guides help illuminate how tourism revenue from visits like yours supports anti-poaching patrols, habitat management and local community projects. On your final day, you travel from Tsavo West back to Nairobi, crossing a landscape that few visitors see in such detail. The timing is planned to suit onward flights or additional nights in the capital. In just five days, you will have felt the contrast between the Kenyan coast and the interior, slept to the sound of waves and then of distant lions, and experienced two distinct but interconnected ecosystems. The itinerary is highly adaptable: extra nights can be added at the beach or in either park, and we can include charter flights for guests who prefer to reduce road distances while still keeping a close connection to the landscapes you have come to experience. Expera Adventures handles all logistics, ensuring that transfers are punctual, park fees are correctly managed and your preferences are communicated to each lodge before arrival. The tone of the trip is relaxed rather than regimented, with plenty of space for personal time and tailored activities, but underpinned by expert planning and a consistent conservation-aware ethos. It is an ideal choice for couples, friends or families seeking a balanced introduction to Kenya’s coast and savannah, with a premium feel and a clear sense of purpose behind every day.
Tour Highlights
Planning your trip from Rwanda
Your adventure begins on the shores of the Indian Ocean in Diani. After a short flight, you’ll be relaxing at a tranquil beachfront lodge, a world away from your routine. Here, the pace is deliberately slow. You can swim in the warm turquoise waters, walk along the pristine beach, or simply enjoy the sea breeze. We’ve chosen properties that focus on quiet relaxation and sustainability, ensuring your stay is both peaceful and positive for the local environment.
From the coast, we travel inland by private 4x4, a journey that reveals the dramatic shift from lush greenery to the open, arid plains of Tsavo East. This park is famous for its immense sense of space and its iconic 'red elephants', dusted by the vibrant soil. Your guide, an expert in the region's ecology, will lead you on game drives to find lion, giraffe, and abundant birdlife, sharing insights into the conservation work that protects this vital habitat.
The adventure continues to the more rugged and volcanic terrain of Tsavo West. The drive between the two parks is a scenic safari in itself. In Tsavo West, you will visit the crystal-clear Mzima Springs to see hippos and crocodiles, explore dramatic lava flows, and, on a clear day, catch a glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro. Your accommodation is selected for its stunning views and commitment to eco-friendly practices, like solar power and water conservation.
Throughout the safari portion, your private vehicle and guide offer total flexibility. Early morning and late afternoon game drives ensure you see the wildlife at its most active, with a relaxing break back at the lodge during the midday heat. Evenings are magical, often with wildlife visiting nearby waterholes, making you feel constantly connected to the wilderness. In just five days, you’ll have experienced the incredible diversity of Kenya, from its warm ocean to its wild heart, all with the logistical ease that makes regional travel so rewarding.
Visa & Entry
As a citizen of Rwanda, you can enjoy the benefits of the East African Community agreement. You do not need a visa to enter Kenya for stays up to six months. You can travel using a valid Rwandan passport with at least six months' validity or simply with your valid National ID card.
Flights & Connections
The journey from Kigali (KGL) is quick and straightforward. Daily direct flights on RwandAir and Kenya Airways connect you to Nairobi (NBO) in about 1.5 hours. For the most direct route to the coast, you can take a connecting flight from Nairobi to Ukunda Airstrip (UKA) in Diani or Mombasa (MBA).
Health, Climate & Packing
While the climate is familiar, Kenya's coast is significantly more hot and humid, and Tsavo is hotter and drier than much of Rwanda. Pack light, breathable clothing, swimwear, a hat, and strong sunscreen. A valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is often required for travel between East African countries, so ensure you carry yours. We also recommend consulting your doctor about malaria prophylaxis for coastal and safari areas.
Money, Time & Culture
Kenya's currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES) and the country is one hour ahead of Rwanda. Major credit cards are accepted at lodges, but having KES for smaller purchases is wise. Kenya's M-Pesa mobile money system is widespread, but you'll need a local SIM card to use it. Your Kinyarwanda and Swahili skills will be a great asset in communicating with local people.
East African Resident Rates
As a citizen of an East African Community country, you may be eligible for preferential resident rates at national parks and some lodges. Be sure to carry your National ID or passport as proof of residency to take advantage of these savings.
Mobile Connectivity & M-Pesa
Your Rwandan SIM card should work on roaming, but purchasing a local Kenyan SIM (like Safaricom) upon arrival is affordable and gives you access to cheaper data and the M-Pesa mobile money network, which is used for everything from tips to souvenirs.
Guidance only — confirm visa, entry and health requirements with the official embassy or eVisa portal before you travel.
