Planning your trip from Rwanda

Imagine trading the thousand hills of Rwanda for the endless, golden plains of Kenya. Our Maasai Mara Wild Escape offers a perfect short getaway from Kigali, immersing you in one of the most famous wildlife landscapes on Earth. While you may be familiar with the beauty of Akagera, the Mara presents an ecosystem on a different scale—a vast, open savanna where horizons stretch forever and wildlife congregates in breathtaking numbers.

This 3-day safari is designed for maximum impact, taking you straight to the heart of the action. The Mara is legendary for its dense populations of predators. Picture lions, their manes catching the morning light, confidently patrolling their territory. See a cheetah, a blur of speed, racing across the plains, or a leopard draped elegantly over a sausage tree branch. These are the classic scenes of an African safari, and they happen here every single day.

Beyond the big cats, you'll witness the sheer scale of the Mara's herds. Towering giraffes move with slow grace, vast families of elephants navigate the grasslands, and massive herds of buffalo create clouds of red dust. During the Great Migration season, the spectacle is amplified a thousand times over, but even outside of this period, the resident wildlife is spectacular and abundant. The Mara River, a lifeline for the ecosystem, is home to pods of hippos and watchful crocodiles, offering a different kind of game viewing experience.

Our expert guides, deeply knowledgeable about the local environment and animal behavior, will enrich your journey, sharing insights that bring the ecosystem to life. You'll stay in comfortable accommodations that place you right in the wilderness, listening to the sounds of the African night. This specially priced 2026 deal makes an iconic safari experience more accessible than ever, providing an unforgettable adventure that beautifully complements the natural treasures you know from home.

Visa & Entry

As a citizen of Rwanda and a member of the East African Community (EAC), you can enter Kenya visa-free for up to six months. You are often permitted to travel between EAC partner states using your national ID card, but we strongly recommend carrying your Rwandan passport, valid for at least six months beyond your entry date, as a best practice. Always confirm the latest entry requirements with the Kenyan High Commission before travel.

Flights & Connections

The journey from Kigali (KGL) to Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) is quick and convenient, with several direct daily flights on airlines like RwandAir. The direct flight time is just under 1.5 hours, making it an easy trip for a short safari. From Nairobi, we handle your onward transfer to the Maasai Mara by road or a short domestic flight.

Health, Climate & Packing

Consult your doctor regarding vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis, as the Maasai Mara is in a malaria-risk area, which may differ from your experience in much of Rwanda. A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate may be required for entry. Pack light layers for warm days and cool evenings, similar to Rwanda, but also include sun protection, a hat, and neutral-coloured clothing for game drives.

Money, Time & Culture

The currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). While major credit cards are accepted at safari lodges, carrying some local currency for tips and small purchases is wise; M-Pesa is also widely used in Kenya. Kenya is one hour ahead of Rwanda (GMT+3). The power sockets are Type G (the three-pronged UK plug), so you will need an adapter for your devices.

East African Community Benefits

As an EAC citizen, you may be eligible for preferential park entry fees compared to non-resident visitors. Be sure to carry your national ID or passport to prove your EAC nationality at park gates.

Connectivity

Your Rwandan SIM card may work on roaming in Kenya, but purchasing a local Kenyan SIM card from providers like Safaricom upon arrival in Nairobi is often more cost-effective for data and local calls.

Guidance only — confirm visa, entry and health requirements with the official embassy or eVisa portal before you travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

While travel between EAC countries with a national ID is often permitted, we highly recommend carrying your passport as the definitive travel document to ensure a smooth entry process for your safari.

The Mara is a vast, open grassland ecosystem known for its huge herds and high density of predators. While Akagera offers beautiful savanna and wetland scenery, the Mara is on a much larger scale, providing a classic 'big sky' safari experience.

You can exchange Rwandan Francs or USD for Kenyan Shillings in Nairobi. For larger payments at the lodge, your credit card will work fine. Consider loading money onto an M-Pesa account if you plan to make small purchases.

The flight from Kigali to Nairobi is about 1.5 hours. The road transfer from Nairobi to the Mara can take 5-6 hours. In total, you should plan for most of a day of travel to get from Kigali to your safari lodge.
