Mara Big Five Fly-In Escape
Tour Overview
Swapping Rwanda's familiar thousand hills for Kenya's iconic savanna is just a short flight away, making this Masai Mara escape the perfect long weekend getaway from Kigali.
This short but immersive Masai Mara fly-in safari is designed for travellers who value time, comfort and meaningful wildlife encounters. By flying directly into the reserve from Nairobi, you avoid long transfer days and arrive rested and ready for your first game drive in one of Africa’s most productive wildlife ecosystems. From the air, the patchwork of acacia-dotted plains and meandering rivers offers your first hint of the vastness you are about to explore. Upon landing, your private guide and vehicle are waiting at the airstrip. Over the next two days, you will follow fresh tracks at dawn, scan riverbanks for big cats and elephants, and linger at sightings without pressure to rush. Expera Adventures works with a curated collection of intimate camps set in wildlife-rich private conservancies or quieter corners of the reserve, where off-the-beaten-track routes and fewer vehicles create a more authentic, low-impact experience. Your tent or suite balances understated luxury with environmental responsibility, often using solar power and water-saving systems, so your comfort supports conservation rather than competing with it. Game drives are kept flexible and personalised. Early mornings often begin with a gentle wake-up, coffee delivered to your veranda, and the soundtrack of the bush before sunrise. You then head out in an open or large-windowed 4x4, guided by a professional who understands both the land and the behaviour of its animals. This is prime Big Five country, but your guide will also introduce you to the smaller stories of the savannah: the social world of zebras, the engineering of termite mounds, and the subtle signs that reveal predators nearby. When conditions allow, you may stay out through mid-morning with a picnic breakfast, maximising time on the plains. Afternoons are deliberately slower. After a fresh, locally inspired lunch and a few leisurely hours to swim, read, or simply watch wildlife passing near camp, you set out for an extended sunset drive. This is often the best time to see lions becoming active, hippos emerging from rivers, and elephants lazily crossing open ground in golden light. Sundowner drinks in a scenic spot are a highlight, and your guide will find a quiet location where you can absorb the scale and silence of the Mara with minimal disturbance to wildlife. Throughout your stay, there is a gentle but consistent emphasis on conservation. Many of the camps we use contribute bed-night levies directly to habitat protection and anti-poaching initiatives, and they partner with local Maasai communities through employment, education and grazing agreements that keep wildlife corridors intact. You will have the chance to hear these stories first-hand, either from camp staff or, subject to timing and interest, during an informal visit to a nearby community project that prioritises dignity and mutual learning over performance. On your final morning, you can opt for one last early game drive or enjoy a relaxed breakfast overlooking the plains before your short flight back to Nairobi. The timing works well for onward connections to the Kenya Coast, making this an ideal safari component paired with time in Diani, Watamu or Malindi. In just three days, you will have experienced a concentrated, high-quality safari that respects both your schedule and the landscape that makes the Masai Mara one of Africa’s greatest wildlife destinations. This itinerary is fully customisable. We can add extra nights in the Mara, arrange a private vehicle for ultimate flexibility, include a sunrise hot-air balloon flight, or connect you directly on to coastal beaches or other Kenyan parks such as Amboseli or Samburu. With Expera Adventures, you are not choosing an off-the-shelf package, but a crafted introduction to East Africa’s wild heart, delivered with professional guiding, reliable logistics, and a clear commitment to conservation-aware travel.
Tour Highlights
Planning your trip from Rwanda
Your journey begins with a quick, direct flight from Kigali to Nairobi. From there, we arrange a seamless transfer to Wilson Airport for your scenic light-aircraft flight directly into the heart of the Masai Mara. As you descend, you'll see the scale of the ecosystem unfold beneath you. Upon landing, your private Expera guide and vehicle will be waiting, ready to begin your first game drive en route to one of our carefully selected partner camps.
Over the next two days, the safari rhythm is yours to define. We prioritize intimate, eco-conscious camps located in quieter areas or private conservancies, ensuring your wildlife encounters with the Big Five are as exclusive as possible. Your professional guide, an expert in the local terrain and animal behaviour, will help you track lions on the hunt at dawn, find a leopard resting in a sausage tree, and appreciate the sheer power of an elephant herd moving across the plains. There’s no fixed schedule; we follow the wildlife and your interests.
Evenings are a celebrated ritual, featuring sundowner drinks at a stunning viewpoint as the sky turns gold, followed by exceptional meals back at camp. The experience is a blend of rustic adventure and understated luxury, with a strong commitment to conservation that supports the local Maasai communities and protects this vital wilderness. This short but powerful journey is a fantastic complement to your life in the region, offering a dramatic change of scenery and a concentrated dose of one of Africa's greatest wildlife destinations, all within easy reach for a memorable break.
Visa & Entry
As a citizen of Rwanda, an East African Community (EAC) partner state, you can enter Kenya visa-free for up to six months. You are permitted to travel using a valid Rwandan national ID card, though carrying a passport with at least six months' validity is always recommended for international travel. Always confirm the latest entry requirements with official Kenyan government sources before your departure.
Flights & Connections
Direct flights from Kigali (KGL) to Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) are readily available on carriers like RwandAir and Kenya Airways, with a flight time of just 1.5 to 2 hours. This tour includes the onward flight from Nairobi's smaller Wilson Airport (WIL) to the Masai Mara, a short 45-minute journey. We will assist with the transfer between the two Nairobi airports.
Health, Climate & Packing
Please consult your doctor regarding malaria prophylaxis, as it is recommended for the Masai Mara region. A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is often required when travelling between East African countries, so ensure yours is up to date. The Mara's climate features warm days and cool nights, so pack layers: light clothing for game drives, plus a warm fleece or jacket for the crisp early mornings and evenings.
Money, Time & Culture
The local currency is the Kenya Shilling (KES), though US Dollars are widely accepted for tour payments and tips at safari lodges. Kenya is one hour ahead of Rwanda (GMT+3). For electronics, Kenya uses the Type G (three-pin UK style) socket, so you will need an adapter for your Rwandan devices. While English is an official language, your knowledge of Swahili will be warmly welcomed.
East African Resident Rates
In some cases, lodges and parks offer preferential rates for East African citizens and residents. Please mention your residency when booking so your Expera concierge can check for any applicable discounts.
Mobile Payments & Connectivity
Kenya's mobile money system, M-PESA, is widespread for small payments. You can easily acquire a local SIM card (like Safaricom) at the airport for data and local calls, which is often more reliable than camp Wi-Fi.
Guidance only — confirm visa, entry and health requirements with the official embassy or eVisa portal before you travel.
