Mara & Diani Signature Escape – Fly-In Bush and Beach
Tour Overview
For our neighbours in Rwanda, Kenya's iconic Maasai Mara and stunning Diani Beach are just a short and easy flight away, making for a perfect and luxurious long weekend escape.
Your adventure begins in Nairobi, where a dedicated meet-and-greet team assists you from the moment you land. After a short transfer to Wilson Airport, you board a light aircraft bound for the Maasai Mara. The city falls away quickly, replaced by patchwork farms and finally by the rolling acacia-dotted plains that have come to define the safari dream. By the time you touch down at the bush airstrip, your safari vehicle is waiting, chilled refreshments at hand, ready to turn your transfer into your first game drive.
In the Mara, you spend two nights at an intimate, well-situated tented camp inside or adjacent to the main reserve, in a wildlife-rich sector chosen for predator activity and open landscapes. Spacious canvas suites with proper beds, ensuite bathrooms and hot showers create a sense of classic safari, while solar power and careful water use reflect a modern conservation ethic. You head out at first light and late afternoon when the animals are at their most active, and at night you fall asleep to a chorus of distant lion calls and the rustle of the savannah.
Game drives are unhurried and interpretive rather than box-ticking. Your professional guide tracks big cats along the riverbanks, follows elephant herds as they move between grazing grounds, and pauses patiently with you at cheetah sightings rather than rushing to the next vehicle cluster. Between drives you return to camp for freshly prepared meals, time by the pool, and perhaps a short guided walk around camp to learn more about plants, tracks and the smaller creatures that underpin the ecosystem.
On day three you take to the skies once more, flying via Nairobi or direct to Ukunda Airstrip. As you descend, the Mara’s golden grasslands give way to turquoise lagoons, coral reefs and long, empty beaches. A short road transfer takes you to your beach retreat, a boutique property on Diani’s quieter stretch, where palm-fringed gardens lead you down to the sand. Here the days move to a gentler rhythm: breakfast on an ocean-facing terrace, leisurely swims, spa treatments and sunset walks along the tideline.
While the focus at the coast is relaxation, there is plenty to do if you wish. You might opt for a half-day dhow excursion in search of dolphins, a guided snorkelling trip over the reef or a reef walk at low tide with a local marine guide. Back at the lodge, you can simply enjoy warm Indian Ocean breezes, fresh seafood and a carefully curated drinks list. The final morning offers time for one last swim before your transfer to Ukunda Airstrip and your flight back to Nairobi, where your onward arrangements begin.
Throughout the journey, the logistics are designed to remove friction: scheduled flights minimize long road transfers, private vehicle safaris keep game viewing exclusive, and your properties are chosen for reliable service and consistent quality. Expera Adventures also partners with camps and lodges that contribute to local conservancies and community projects, ensuring that your stay supports sustainable land use, wildlife protection and livelihoods in both the Mara and along the coast.
This itinerary is ideal for first-time visitors seeking a high-quality introduction to Kenya, couples wanting a short but indulgent break, or business travellers looking to add a curated mini-safari and beach stay to a regional trip. It can also be tailored with extra nights in either the Mara or Diani, or upgraded with a hot air balloon flight or private catamaran charter, to match the pace and level of exclusivity you prefer.
Tour Highlights
Planning your trip from Rwanda
Your journey is built around seamless transitions. Upon arrival in Nairobi, our team meets you and facilitates a quick transfer to Wilson Airport for your light aircraft flight directly into the heart of the Mara. Forget long, bumpy road transfers; you will be touching down on a bush airstrip, with a chilled drink in hand, in what feels like no time at all. This efficiency transforms a trip that could take days into an effortless escape.
In the Maasai Mara, a landscape quite different from Akagera with its immense, rolling grasslands, you will spend two nights in an exclusive tented camp. This is classic safari with modern comforts: spacious suites, proper beds, and ensuite bathrooms, all with a light environmental footprint. Your days are spent on unhurried game drives with an expert guide, tracking the Mara's famed big cats and elephants, allowing you to truly immerse yourself in the wildlife spectacle. The experience is intimate and interpretive, not just about ticking off a list.
Then, just as you've settled into the savannah's rhythm, we whisk you away again. Another flight takes you from the bush to the coast, trading acacia trees for coconut palms. You'll descend over the turquoise Indian Ocean to Diani, where a boutique beach retreat awaits. The pace shifts from adventure to pure relaxation. Here, you can unwind by the pool, walk for miles on powder-soft white sand, or perhaps take a dhow trip to snorkel over the coral reefs.
Throughout your trip, all the logistics are handled. From the regional flight connections to the bush flights and private transfers, every detail is coordinated to create a smooth and indulgent experience. This isn't just a holiday; it's a curated break that combines two of Kenya’s most sought-after destinations into one short, unforgettable journey, perfect for a special occasion or a well-deserved respite from city life in Kigali.
Visa & Entry
As a citizen of Rwanda, you can enjoy visa-free travel to Kenya for up to six months. You can enter using either a valid Rwandan passport or your National ID card. It is always recommended to travel with your passport, which should have at least six months of validity remaining. Please confirm the latest entry requirements with the Kenyan High Commission in Kigali before your trip.
Flights & Connections
The journey from Kigali (KGL) to Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) is quick and direct, with daily flights on carriers like RwandAir and Kenya Airways taking approximately 1.5 hours. From NBO, we handle your seamless transfer to Wilson Airport (WIL) for your included scenic flight into the Maasai Mara.
Health, Climate & Packing
While the climate is broadly similar, the Mara and Diani are lower in altitude and can be warmer and more humid than much of Rwanda. Malaria is a risk in both locations, so please consult your doctor about appropriate prophylaxis. Pack light layers for the Mara—warm fleeces for cool mornings and evenings, and light clothing for midday—along with swimwear and beach attire for Diani. A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate may be required for entry, so ensure you carry it with you.
Money, Time & Culture
The currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). While US dollars are accepted at lodges, using KES or a card is best for other purchases. M-Pesa is widely used but you'll need a local Kenyan SIM. Kenya is one hour ahead of Rwanda (GMT+3). Remember to pack a Type G (UK-style 3-pin) adapter, as it differs from the plugs used in Rwanda. A few Swahili greetings like 'Jambo' (Hello) and 'Asante' (Thank you) will be warmly received.
East African Community Travel
As a member of the EAC, your travel between Rwanda and Kenya is greatly simplified. Enjoy the convenience of shorter immigration lines and the camaraderie of regional travel.
Connectivity & Mobile Money
Upon arrival at JKIA in Nairobi, you can easily purchase a local SIM card (e.g., Safaricom) to stay connected and use the ubiquitous M-Pesa mobile money service. eSIM options are also readily available for compatible phones.
Guidance only — confirm visa, entry and health requirements with the official embassy or eVisa portal before you travel.
