Mombasa & Diani Oceanfront Retreat with Safari Day
Tour Overview
For our neighbours in Rwanda, Kenya's sun-drenched coast offers a perfect and accessible escape, blending historical intrigue with pure beachfront relaxation on the shores of the Indian Ocean.
From Mombasa you travel south to Diani Beach, a stretch of white sand regularly cited as one of Africa’s most attractive shorelines. The route itself traces coastal villages and palm-fringed bays, before you arrive at a carefully chosen boutique resort. Here, your room opens onto gardens or sea views, and the days can be as active or relaxed as you wish. Snorkelling, dhow sailing and stand-up paddling are available, but so is the simple pleasure of reading under a coconut tree while waves break on the reef. Throughout, Expera Adventures encourages low-impact choices that respect marine environments and local community norms.
Central to this itinerary is a day trip to Shimba Hills National Reserve, one of the few coastal forests in East Africa that still supports viable populations of large mammals. It lies within driving distance of Diani yet feels worlds apart, with rolling hills, deep ravines and patches of thick forest. On arrival, you trade sea breezes for cooler air scented with leaves and earth. Your guide leads game viewing in search of sable antelope, elephant and a variety of birds, explaining how forest reserves complement savannah parks in Kenya’s conservation mosaic. A short walk to a viewpoint reveals sweeping vistas back toward the coast.
Meals across the itinerary highlight fresh coastal produce and Swahili flavours, from spiced seafood stews to coconut-rich vegetarian dishes. You have opportunities to visit local markets, try street snacks with guidance, and dine at selected restaurants committed to responsible sourcing. If you are travelling as a couple, sunset dhow cruises and private beach dinners can be arranged; families may prefer sandcastle sessions, safe lagoon swimming and informal village visits where children can see how life is lived away from resorts.
By combining two distinct coastal bases with a nearby safari day, this trip offers variety without the exhaustion of constant movement. The initial days in Mombasa gently orient you to Kenya and its coast, while Diani provides space to truly unwind. Shimba Hills offers just enough wildlife and scenery to satisfy curiosity or bridge the gap for travellers who will later visit larger parks. For guests who have limited time or prefer to avoid long internal flights, it is an accessible way to experience different facets of the country.
Expera Adventures manages the practical details quietly in the background: private road transfers, vetted accommodation, and knowledgeable local guides who understand both international expectations and local realities. You benefit from honest advice on where and when to swim, how to support community enterprises meaningfully, and which optional excursions offer real value rather than gimmicks. The result is a holiday that feels both premium and grounded, offering comfort, beauty and a clear sense of place.
At the end of six days, you leave with the memory of floating in warm, clear water, listening to calls to prayer drift across Mombasa’s harbour, and watching forest mist lift over Shimba Hills. More importantly, you have gained a practical understanding of how Kenya’s coast functions environmentally and culturally, and how thoughtful travel can help keep its reefs, beaches and forests intact for those who come after you.
Tour Highlights
Planning your trip from Rwanda
Your journey begins in Mombasa, a city whose Swahili culture offers a fascinating contrast to East Africa's interior. We’ll guide you through the narrow, winding alleys of the Old Town, where the air is scented with spices and history feels alive in the architecture. After exploring, you can unwind at your premium hotel, letting the rhythm of the ocean set a relaxed pace. This isn't about rushing; it's about soaking in a completely different atmosphere just a short flight away.
From Mombasa, we'll take a scenic drive south to Diani Beach, frequently named one of Africa's most beautiful coastlines. Here, your boutique resort is a sanctuary of calm. Whether you choose to snorkel in the clear waters of the marine park, sail on a traditional dhow, or simply relax with a book under a palm tree, the days are yours to shape. It’s the perfect environment to truly disconnect and recharge.
The highlight for many is the day trip to Shimba Hills National Reserve. While you are familiar with incredible wildlife, this experience is unique. It’s one of the last coastal rainforests in East Africa, offering a chance to see rare Sable antelope and forest elephants in a landscape of rolling green hills that cascade towards the sea. It’s a wonderful, accessible safari that doesn’t require long travel days, perfectly complementing your beach time.
Throughout the trip, you’ll enjoy the distinct flavours of Swahili coastal cuisine, rich with coconut, fresh seafood, and aromatic spices. We handle all the logistics—private transfers, excellent accommodation, and expert local guides—so you can simply enjoy the seamless transition from the heart of East Africa to its stunning coastline. This tour offers a beautiful blend of relaxation, culture, and nature, making it an ideal short break or holiday.
Visa & Entry
As a Rwandan citizen and member of the East African Community, you can enter Kenya visa-free for tourism. You can typically travel using your national ID card, though carrying a passport with at least six months' validity is always recommended. Always confirm the very latest entry requirements with official Kenyan government sources before your departure.
Flights & Connections
Getting to the Kenyan coast from Kigali is very straightforward. Carriers like RwandAir and Kenya Airways offer direct flights from Kigali (KGL) to Nairobi (NBO) in under two hours, with excellent onward connections to Mombasa (MBA). Direct flights to Mombasa are also often available, providing the most seamless journey.
Health, Climate & Packing
Ensure your Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is current, as it is required for travel between our countries. The Kenyan coast is hot and humid year-round, a significant change from Rwanda's temperate highlands, so pack light, breathable clothing like cotton and linen, swimwear, and strong sun protection. Consulting your doctor about malaria prophylaxis is strongly advised for coastal regions.
Money, Time & Culture
Kenya's currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). While your hotel and some operators accept USD, it's best to use KES for daily expenses; ATMs are widely available. Kenya is one hour ahead of Rwanda (UTC+3). Remember to bring a Type G (UK-style three-pin) plug adapter, as it differs from the sockets commonly used in Rwanda.
Mobile Connectivity
Your Rwandan mobile provider's East African roaming bundle should work well in Mombasa and Diani. Alternatively, purchasing a local Kenyan SIM card from a provider like Safaricom is inexpensive and provides excellent data coverage.
Regional Familiarity
As a fellow East African, you'll appreciate the warm hospitality. Simple Swahili greetings like 'Jambo' or 'Karibu' are a wonderful way to connect, and you'll find the friendly coastal culture very welcoming.
Guidance only — confirm visa, entry and health requirements with the official embassy or eVisa portal before you travel.
