Diani Sands & Tsavo Two-Worlds Journey
Tour Overview
Looking for a short break just across the border? For our neighbours in Tanzania, this five-day Kenyan journey offers a perfect and easily accessible blend of the Indian Ocean coast and classic safari landscapes.
This five-day journey has been created for travellers who want both an Indian Ocean retreat and an authentic Kenyan safari without rushing between regions. It begins and ends on the white sands of Diani Beach, where warm turquoise waters meet coastal forest, and blends seamlessly into a two-park exploration of Tsavo East and Tsavo West. Each step has been designed with comfort, practicality and conservation in mind, using road transfers that follow logical routes and lodges that prioritise both service and sustainability. Your time in Diani is deliberately unhurried. After arrival at Ukunda Airstrip or by road from Mombasa, you are transferred to a carefully selected beachfront hotel or boutique lodge, where you can decompress from travel with a swim, a walk on the beach or a quiet drink as the sun sets over the palms. The focus here is on the quieter, more natural side of the coast: rooms that open to sea breeze rather than loud nightlife, and properties that work actively to reduce plastic waste and protect the fragile marine environment. Optional activities, from guided reef walks to low-impact dhow cruises and responsible snorkelling, allow you to enjoy the ocean without placing pressure on coral or marine life. From Diani, you travel inland towards Tsavo East, watching the landscape transition from coastal greenery to open scrub and red-earth plains. Tsavo East is one of Kenya’s largest and wildest national parks, known for its big skies, red-dusted elephants and a strong sense of space. Here you settle into a lodge that combines comfort with a front-row seat to wildlife, often overlooking a waterhole or river where animals come to drink. Game drives focus on tracking elephants, lions, giraffes and the park’s rich birdlife, while your guide introduces you to the park’s complex history and current conservation efforts, including challenges posed by human-wildlife conflict along its boundaries. The next stage of your journey takes you across to Tsavo West, a park defined by dramatic lava flows, rugged hills and natural springs. The drive itself acts as an extended game drive, and by the time you arrive at your next lodge you have traced a subtle shift in ecology and scenery. Tsavo West offers excellent chances of seeing rhino in protected areas, hippos at crystal-clear Mzima Springs and striking views of Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days. Your lodge has been chosen for its vantage point and its environmental credentials, making use of solar energy and water conservation techniques to reduce its footprint in this fragile semi-arid landscape. Throughout the safari days, you travel in a private 4x4 with a professional guide, allowing for flexibility in timing, longer stops at sightings and unhurried photography. Drives generally take place in the early mornings and late afternoons when wildlife is most active, returning to camp for relaxed lunches and time to swim or rest during the heat of the day. Evenings often bring animals close to the lodges’ waterholes, meaning the safari never really stops even when you are back in camp. Discussions with staff and guides help illuminate how tourism revenue from visits like yours supports anti-poaching patrols, habitat management and local community projects. On your final day, you travel from Tsavo West back to Nairobi, crossing a landscape that few visitors see in such detail. The timing is planned to suit onward flights or additional nights in the capital. In just five days, you will have felt the contrast between the Kenyan coast and the interior, slept to the sound of waves and then of distant lions, and experienced two distinct but interconnected ecosystems. The itinerary is highly adaptable: extra nights can be added at the beach or in either park, and we can include charter flights for guests who prefer to reduce road distances while still keeping a close connection to the landscapes you have come to experience. Expera Adventures handles all logistics, ensuring that transfers are punctual, park fees are correctly managed and your preferences are communicated to each lodge before arrival. The tone of the trip is relaxed rather than regimented, with plenty of space for personal time and tailored activities, but underpinned by expert planning and a consistent conservation-aware ethos. It is an ideal choice for couples, friends or families seeking a balanced introduction to Kenya’s coast and savannah, with a premium feel and a clear sense of purpose behind every day.
Tour Highlights
Planning your trip from Tanzania, United Republic of
Your trip starts with relaxation in Diani. After arriving by road via the Lunga Lunga border or a short flight into Ukunda Airstrip, you'll be transferred to a serene beachfront hotel. Here, the pace is intentionally slow, allowing you to enjoy the turquoise waters and coastal forests. We select lodges that respect the marine environment, much like the protected areas you might know from home, focusing on a quiet, natural experience rather than crowded tourist spots.
From the coast, we drive you inland towards Tsavo East. You'll notice the landscape change from lush green to the iconic red-earth plains that make this park famous. While you are familiar with great East African wildernesses, Tsavo offers a unique feel with its legendary 'red elephants' and a profound sense of open space. Your lodge here will offer prime wildlife viewing, often overlooking a waterhole that draws animals directly to you.
Next, the journey continues to Tsavo West, a park of dramatic contrasts with its volcanic hills, dark lava flows, and the crystal-clear Mzima Springs, where you can see hippos underwater. The scenery here is quite different from many Tanzanian parks, offering fresh perspectives and fantastic photographic opportunities, with the possibility of seeing Mount Kilimanjaro from the Kenyan side on a clear day. Your accommodation is chosen for its stunning views and commitment to sustainability.
Throughout the safari portion, you'll travel in a private 4x4 with an experienced guide, enjoying early morning and late afternoon game drives. This comfortable rhythm allows for plenty of time to rest during the midday heat. The trip concludes with a drive back to Nairobi, a convenient hub for a short flight back to Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, or Zanzibar. In just five days, you'll have experienced the magnificent diversity of Kenya, a perfect complement to the wild spaces you know and love back home.
Visa & Entry
As a citizen of the United Republic of Tanzania, you can enter Kenya visa-free, thanks to East African Community (EAC) agreements. You may travel with a valid national passport with at least six months' validity or a valid EAC-issued National ID card. It is always wise to confirm the latest entry requirements with the Kenyan High Commission before you travel.
Flights & Connections
For this itinerary starting in Diani, the most convenient option is flying from Dar es Salaam (DAR) or Zanzibar (ZNZ) to Mombasa (MBA) or directly to Ukunda's airstrip (UKA). From northern Tanzania, you can drive via the Taveta border crossing. The tour concludes in Nairobi (NBO), from where there are frequent, short flights back to all major Tanzanian airports.
Health, Climate & Packing
Kenya requires proof of Yellow Fever vaccination for travellers arriving from Tanzania, so be sure to carry your certificate. Anti-malaria precautions are recommended for the coastal and Tsavo regions, just as they are in similar areas of Tanzania. The climate is very familiar—hot and humid on the coast, and hot and dry inland—so pack lightweight clothing, a hat, sun cream, and a warm layer for cooler evenings.
Money, Time & Culture
The currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). While US dollars are accepted at some lodges, it's best to use KES, especially for smaller purchases. M-Pesa is as widespread in Kenya as it is in Tanzania for mobile payments. There is no time difference between our countries (EAT, GMT+3), and Kenya also uses the Type G (UK-style) 3-pin plug. Your Swahili will be perfectly understood everywhere you go!
East African Resident Considerations
As a citizen of an East African Community country, you may be eligible for resident rates on park entry fees. Please carry your National ID or passport to benefit from these potential discounts.
Overland Travel Option
If you prefer to drive, the journey from northern Tanzania via the Holili/Taveta border is straightforward and offers a scenic route into the Tsavo region. From coastal Tanzania, the Lunga Lunga border provides direct access to the Diani area.
Guidance only — confirm visa, entry and health requirements with the official embassy or eVisa portal before you travel.
