Tour Overview

As a neighbour from Tanzania, you know the beauty of the Swahili coast, but this short retreat to Diani offers a fresh perspective that's just a quick and easy journey north.

This five-day Diani retreat is crafted for travelers who want the softness of a world-class beach without losing sight of Kenya’s landscapes and cultures that lie just beyond the shoreline. It combines generous time on the sand with a day in the Shimba Hills, encounters with Swahili coastal heritage, and flexible options for marine and community experiences. The focus is unhurried, premium, and conservation-aware, making it a natural complement to a safari or a standalone break.

You begin at Ukunda airstrip, where a private transfer whisks you to an upscale lodge or villa tucked among tropical gardens behind Diani’s long white beach. Your first impression is likely the color of the water: the pale turquoise band beyond the reef. After a welcome drink and a short orientation, you can shed travel fatigue in the pool, on a shaded veranda, or with a walk down to the sand. The day is left deliberately open to let you settle in, adjust to the coastal climate, and discover your favorite quiet corner on the property.

On the second day you stay close to the water. After breakfast, you have the option to join a small-boat excursion out towards the reef and sandbars, timing departure with the tides. Depending on the season and conditions, you may watch for dolphins in deeper channels or snorkel over shallow coral heads with guidance on how to move gently through this environment. If you prefer to remain on land, a curated beach walk introduces you to local fishing practices, seaweed harvesting, and the ebb and flow of life along this strip of coast. The afternoon is yours to slow right down. Many guests choose a long, simple lunch, a swim, and a nap, followed by a quiet evening under the stars.

Day three takes you inland to the Shimba Hills National Reserve, one of the few coastal forests left in East Africa. The short but scenic drive climbs from palms and small villages into cooler air and views across rolling hills towards the Indian Ocean. Once inside the reserve, your guide will help you look for sable antelope, giraffe, and forest elephants, while explaining how this patch of forest fits into regional conservation efforts. A gentle walk to a viewpoint or waterfall may be possible depending on conditions and your comfort level. A picnic-style or lodge lunch keeps the day relaxed. In the afternoon, you descend back to Diani, returning to your base in time for an evening swim or a sunset drink on the beach.

Your fourth day is devoted to the cultural stories of the coast. A guided visit to a nearby village or historic site introduces you to Swahili and Mijikenda traditions, local architecture, and everyday life away from the tourist strip. You might visit a traditional homestead, a small women’s cooperative, or a local market, with your guide facilitating respectful interactions and translations. This is an opportunity to see the economic reality behind the service smiles and to contribute directly to community-led initiatives. The afternoon is unstructured so that you can absorb the experience at your own pace, perhaps choosing a quiet kayak paddle in the creek, a yoga session, or simply more time on the sand.

On your final morning, the rhythm slows even further. Whether you rise for sunrise on the beach, stretch out your last breakfast, or fit in a final swim, the schedule bends to your preferences and onward plans. When it is time to leave, you are transferred back to Ukunda or Mombasa with the sense that you have experienced Diani as more than a postcard. You have seen the hills that hold its water, met people whose lives are woven into the tides, and understood how your visit can help sustain a stretch of coastline that remains one of the most beautiful in East Africa.

Planning your trip from Tanzania, United Republic of

For those accustomed to the familiar shores of Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam, our Diani Tides & Coastal Culture Retreat is a chance to experience the Kenyan coast in a new light. This five-day journey is more than just a beach holiday; it's a carefully curated immersion into the landscapes and communities that make this stretch of coastline unique, all with the convenience of a short trip from home.

Your escape begins as you arrive at Ukunda airstrip, a stone's throw from the brilliant white sands of Diani. We'll handle the seamless transfer to your premium lodge, where you can immediately slip into the relaxed coastal rhythm. The first day is intentionally unstructured, allowing you to settle in, perhaps with a walk along the shore to feel the subtle differences in the sand and sea, or simply relaxing by the pool.

The real distinction of this retreat reveals itself on the following days. While you'll have ample time for ocean swims and optional boat excursions, we also take you inland to the Shimba Hills National Reserve. This isn't your typical Maasai Mara safari; it's a visit to one of East Africa's last remaining coastal rainforests. The air is cooler here, the views stretch back to the ocean, and the wildlife is unique, including the rare and beautiful sable antelope—a sight not found in most other parks.

We believe a true coastal experience goes beyond the tourist resorts. That's why we've arranged a respectful and insightful visit to a local village, where you'll learn about the heritage of the Mijikenda people. This isn't a performance, but a genuine interaction facilitated by your guide, offering a glimpse into daily life and traditions that are distinct from those you might know from the Tanzanian coast. It’s an opportunity to see how your visit contributes positively to the community.

Think of this not as a long-haul adventure, but as an elevated long weekend or a perfect complement to business in Mombasa or Nairobi. It’s a chance to see a familiar landscape through a new lens, combining the ease of regional travel with the premium, thoughtful service Expera Adventures is known for.

Visa & Entry

As a citizen of Tanzania, an East African Community partner state, you can travel to Kenya visa-free for tourism. You will need a valid passport or an acceptable national identity card to present at immigration. Always confirm the latest entry document requirements with the Kenyan High Commission in Dar es Salaam before you travel.

Flights & Connections

The quickest way to reach Diani is a short flight from Dar es Salaam (DAR) or Zanzibar (ZNZ) to Ukunda Airstrip (UKA). Alternatively, many flights serve Mombasa's Moi International Airport (MBA), from which it is about a one-hour road transfer. For those driving, the journey from Tanga is straightforward via the Lunga Lunga border post.

Health, Climate & Packing

Diani's warm, humid climate will feel just like home on the Tanzanian coast. Pack light clothing, swimwear, and sun protection, but also include a long-sleeved shirt for the cooler air in the Shimba Hills and modest attire (covering shoulders and knees) for the community visit. While malaria precautions are similar to those at home, consulting your doctor for personalized advice is always recommended.

Money, Time & Culture

Kenya's currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES); Tanzanian Shillings are not accepted. Your lodge will accept major credit cards and USD, but having KES for local markets and tips is advisable. Kenya shares the same East Africa Time zone, and you'll find the Type G (UK 3-pin) power sockets are identical to those in Tanzania.

East African Community Travel

As an EAC citizen, you can use your valid national ID card for entry, making for a streamlined arrival process at the border or airport.

Overland Travel Option

For those with a suitable vehicle, driving from Tanga or Dar es Salaam is a great way to see the countryside. The Lunga Lunga border post is straightforward, but ensure your vehicle's cross-border permits and insurance are in order.

Mobile Money & Connectivity

While Kenya's M-Pesa is dominant, cross-network transfers from your Tanzanian mobile money account can have high fees. We recommend getting a local Kenyan SIM card on arrival for the most reliable and affordable data.

Guidance only — confirm visa, entry and health requirements with the official embassy or eVisa portal before you travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, it's a very manageable drive, especially from Tanga or Dar es Salaam. The primary route is via the Lunga Lunga-Horohoro border crossing, which leads directly to Kenya's south coast. Ensure your vehicle's cross-border permits and insurance are up to date.

As a citizen of the EAC, your Tanzanian national ID card (NIDA) is officially an acceptable travel document for entry into Kenya. However, we always recommend carrying your passport as the primary and most universally accepted form of identification.

While both offer beautiful Swahili coast beaches, this tour highlights Diani's unique inland attractions. The day trip to the Shimba Hills coastal forest and its rare sable antelope, plus encounters with Mijikenda culture, provide a very different experience from Zanzibar's focus on Stone Town history.

You cannot use Tanzanian Shillings for payments in Kenya. You must exchange for Kenyan Shillings (KES). While M-Pesa exists in Kenya, your Tanzanian account won't work seamlessly; it is best to get a local SIM or use cash/card.

1

Arrive in Diani and Ease into Coastal Time

10–40 km depending on arrival point 30–90 minutes depending on traffic and route
On arrival at Ukunda airstrip or Mombasa, you are greeted by an Expera representative and transferred privately to your lodge or villa in Diani. The drive introduces you to the rhythm of the coast: clusters of shops, coconut palms, the occasional glimpse of the sea. At check-in, you are welcomed with a cool drink and a brief introduction to the property’s approach to conservation, from water usage to waste management. The remainder of the day is intentionally open. You may choose to unpack slowly, explore the gardens, or walk down to the beach for your first feel of Diani’s fine sand. If you arrive early enough, there is time for a swim or a relaxed lunch. As the day cools, you might wander along the shoreline or simply watch the sky change color from a comfortable chair, letting the sound of the waves reset your pace before dinner at the lodge.
Activities: Private transfer from Ukunda or Mombasa to Diani lodge or villa
Welcome briefing and orientation to property and local area
Unstructured afternoon for rest, swimming, or a beach stroll
Dinner at the lodge featuring fresh coastal ingredients
2

Ocean Morning and Diani at Your Own Pace

Variable short distances by boat if marine excursion chosen Minimal road transfer; boat time 1–2 hours if selected
After a leisurely breakfast, you can decide how actively you want to engage with the sea today. One option is a small-group or private boat excursion out towards the reef and sandbars, planned around the tides to allow swimming or snorkeling in relatively calm waters. Your guide will brief you on safety and on how to enjoy the marine life responsibly, avoiding contact with corals and minimizing disturbance to wildlife. Alternatively, you may prefer to stay closer to shore, joining a guided beach walk that explores how locals use the ocean for food, transport, and income, and how climate and development are reshaping the shoreline. The afternoon is deliberately free. Read under a palm, book a massage, or try stand-up paddleboarding if conditions allow. As evening comes, sit down to another unhurried dinner at the lodge, with the option to step out for a night-time walk on the sand under a sky that is often bright with stars.
Activities: Optional small-boat marine excursion with guided snorkeling
Guided beach walk exploring local coastal life and ecology
Ample free time for swimming, reading, or wellness treatments
Dinner and evening at leisure at the lodge
3

Shimba Hills Forested Hills and Wildlife

70–120 km round trip by road 2–3.5 hours total driving time
Today you leave the flat coastal plain behind and climb into the Shimba Hills National Reserve. After an early breakfast, your guide collects you for the drive inland, which takes you through villages, farmland, and gradually changing vegetation. At the park gate, you swap the sea breeze for cooler, forest-scented air. The reserve is home to sable antelope, elephants, and a variety of birdlife, alongside patches of coastal rainforest that are increasingly rare. Your game drive is unhurried, with plenty of time to stop, look, and listen, and to hear from your guide about current conservation challenges and successes. If conditions and your preferences align, there may be an opportunity for a short, guided walk to a viewpoint or waterfall, where you can stretch your legs and take in the views towards the sea. A simple lunch is served either at a scenic picnic site or at a nearby lodge. In the afternoon you descend back to Diani, returning in time for a swim or a rest before dinner, with the satisfaction of having seen a very different side of the coast.
Activities: Private return transfer from Diani to Shimba Hills National Reserve
Guided game drive in search of sable antelope, elephants, and other wildlife
Optional short, guided walk to a viewpoint or waterfall
Picnic or lodge lunch in or near the reserve
4

Swahili Coastal Culture and Community Encounters

10–40 km round trip by road 30–90 minutes combined, depending on chosen sites
On your fourth day, your focus shifts from nature to people. After breakfast, you meet your cultural guide for a visit to a nearby village or heritage site connected to Diani. This is not a staged performance, but a facilitated introduction to everyday life and long-standing traditions. You may see examples of Swahili or Mijikenda architecture, step inside a simple home, or visit a small women’s cooperative producing crafts or food items. Your guide will interpret conversations, answer questions on both sides, and help ensure that your presence is respectful and welcomed. There is often time to sit, share tea, and hear personal perspectives on tourism, education, and the changing coast. Later, you return to the lodge for a free afternoon. Some guests choose to reflect quietly, while others may opt for a paddle in a nearby creek or a gentle yoga session on the lawn. Your final dinner in Diani is a good moment to savor the flavors of the coast and the stories you have gathered.
Activities: Guided visit to a local village or coastal heritage site
Introductions to community projects or cooperatives where appropriate
Time for conversation, questions, and cultural exchange
Afternoon at leisure at the lodge or with optional low-impact activities
5

Easy Morning on the Beach and Departure

10–40 km depending on departure point 30–90 minutes depending on route and traffic
Your final morning on the south coast is left open so that you can shape it around your energy and onward travel. If your flight is later in the day, you might walk the beach at first light, savor a long breakfast, or enjoy one last swim in the pool or ocean. Those with an early departure will have a simpler routine, but still with time to pause and look out at the water. After check-out, your driver will transfer you back to Ukunda or Mombasa, allowing enough time for check-in and any connections. As you leave Diani, you take with you not only the memory of its sand and blue water, but also a sense of the hills and forests behind it, and of the communities for whom this coastline is home.
Activities: Optional sunrise walk or final swim depending on flight time
Leisurely breakfast and check-out at the lodge
Private transfer to Ukunda airstrip or Mombasa airport
Assistance with timing and logistics for onward travel
