Diani Sands & Tsavo Two-Worlds Journey
Tour Overview
Planning a short getaway from Uganda? This five-day journey to Kenya combines the stunning Diani Beach with the wild, open spaces of Tsavo, offering a perfect and easily accessible regional escape.
This five-day journey has been created for travellers who want both an Indian Ocean retreat and an authentic Kenyan safari without rushing between regions. It begins and ends on the white sands of Diani Beach, where warm turquoise waters meet coastal forest, and blends seamlessly into a two-park exploration of Tsavo East and Tsavo West. Each step has been designed with comfort, practicality and conservation in mind, using road transfers that follow logical routes and lodges that prioritise both service and sustainability. Your time in Diani is deliberately unhurried. After arrival at Ukunda Airstrip or by road from Mombasa, you are transferred to a carefully selected beachfront hotel or boutique lodge, where you can decompress from travel with a swim, a walk on the beach or a quiet drink as the sun sets over the palms. The focus here is on the quieter, more natural side of the coast: rooms that open to sea breeze rather than loud nightlife, and properties that work actively to reduce plastic waste and protect the fragile marine environment. Optional activities, from guided reef walks to low-impact dhow cruises and responsible snorkelling, allow you to enjoy the ocean without placing pressure on coral or marine life. From Diani, you travel inland towards Tsavo East, watching the landscape transition from coastal greenery to open scrub and red-earth plains. Tsavo East is one of Kenya’s largest and wildest national parks, known for its big skies, red-dusted elephants and a strong sense of space. Here you settle into a lodge that combines comfort with a front-row seat to wildlife, often overlooking a waterhole or river where animals come to drink. Game drives focus on tracking elephants, lions, giraffes and the park’s rich birdlife, while your guide introduces you to the park’s complex history and current conservation efforts, including challenges posed by human-wildlife conflict along its boundaries. The next stage of your journey takes you across to Tsavo West, a park defined by dramatic lava flows, rugged hills and natural springs. The drive itself acts as an extended game drive, and by the time you arrive at your next lodge you have traced a subtle shift in ecology and scenery. Tsavo West offers excellent chances of seeing rhino in protected areas, hippos at crystal-clear Mzima Springs and striking views of Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days. Your lodge has been chosen for its vantage point and its environmental credentials, making use of solar energy and water conservation techniques to reduce its footprint in this fragile semi-arid landscape. Throughout the safari days, you travel in a private 4x4 with a professional guide, allowing for flexibility in timing, longer stops at sightings and unhurried photography. Drives generally take place in the early mornings and late afternoons when wildlife is most active, returning to camp for relaxed lunches and time to swim or rest during the heat of the day. Evenings often bring animals close to the lodges’ waterholes, meaning the safari never really stops even when you are back in camp. Discussions with staff and guides help illuminate how tourism revenue from visits like yours supports anti-poaching patrols, habitat management and local community projects. On your final day, you travel from Tsavo West back to Nairobi, crossing a landscape that few visitors see in such detail. The timing is planned to suit onward flights or additional nights in the capital. In just five days, you will have felt the contrast between the Kenyan coast and the interior, slept to the sound of waves and then of distant lions, and experienced two distinct but interconnected ecosystems. The itinerary is highly adaptable: extra nights can be added at the beach or in either park, and we can include charter flights for guests who prefer to reduce road distances while still keeping a close connection to the landscapes you have come to experience. Expera Adventures handles all logistics, ensuring that transfers are punctual, park fees are correctly managed and your preferences are communicated to each lodge before arrival. The tone of the trip is relaxed rather than regimented, with plenty of space for personal time and tailored activities, but underpinned by expert planning and a consistent conservation-aware ethos. It is an ideal choice for couples, friends or families seeking a balanced introduction to Kenya’s coast and savannah, with a premium feel and a clear sense of purpose behind every day.
Tour Highlights
Planning your trip from Uganda
Your journey starts with a relaxing stay on the coast, a short flight or a manageable road trip away. We’ve selected lodges that focus on tranquillity and the natural beauty of the shoreline, allowing you to unwind completely. It’s a chance to experience the Swahili coast culture, enjoy the warm sea breeze, and perhaps take a dhow cruise at sunset – a different pace of life from Kampala or Entebbe.
From the coast, we travel inland to Tsavo, a region whose scale and scenery will feel wonderfully distinct. First, you’ll explore Tsavo East, renowned for its vast, semi-arid plains and the famous 'red elephants' that dust themselves in the rich, iron-oxide soil. The sense of space here is immense. Your lodge will be strategically positioned, often overlooking a waterhole, providing continuous game viewing even during your downtime.
Next, you’ll cross into Tsavo West, where the landscape dramatically changes to one of volcanic hills, lava flows, and hidden oases like Mzima Springs. Here, you can see hippos and crocodiles in crystal-clear water and, on a clear day, enjoy views of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. This part of the journey highlights a different kind of wildness – rugged, dramatic, and ancient.
Throughout the safari portion, your private 4x4 and guide give you the flexibility to explore at your own pace. As a fellow East African, you'll appreciate the subtleties your guide points out in the ecosystems and the conservation stories they share. The five-day itinerary is designed to be efficient without feeling rushed, making it an ideal break before you return to Nairobi for your onward journey home.
Visa & Entry
As a citizen of Uganda, you can travel to Kenya visa-free under East African Community (EAC) arrangements. You can typically enter using a valid national ID card or a passport with at least six months of validity. It is always wise to confirm the latest entry requirements with the Kenyan High Commission before you travel.
Flights & Connections
The easiest way to reach the start of the tour is by flying from Entebbe (EBB) directly to Mombasa (MBA) or Ukunda (UKA) on the coast, a flight of under two hours. Alternatively, you can fly into Nairobi (NBO) and connect. For those preferring to drive, the journey by road via the Busia or Malaba border is a popular option, offering a chance to see the countryside.
Health, Climate & Packing
The health considerations for Kenya are very similar to Uganda, but it's essential to ensure your routine vaccinations, including Yellow Fever, are up to date and that you carry your certificate. While the climate is familiar, Diani will be more hot and humid, and Tsavo very dry and warm, so pack light cotton clothing, swimwear, a hat, and a light jacket for cooler evenings and early morning game drives.
Money, Time & Culture
Kenya uses the Kenyan Shilling (KES), so you will need to exchange your Ugandan Shillings or use services like M-Pesa, which is widely available. There is no time difference between Uganda and Kenya, making coordination simple. Plugs are the Type G three-pin socket, the same as in Uganda, and you will find Swahili is widely spoken, making communication very easy.
East African Resident Rates
As an East African citizen, you are entitled to significantly lower park entry fees. Be sure to carry your Ugandan National ID or passport to benefit from these resident rates, which we will factor into your final pricing.
Connectivity on the Go
While roaming with your Ugandan SIM is possible, getting a local Kenyan SIM card (like Safaricom) upon arrival is affordable and provides access to reliable data and the M-Pesa mobile money system.
Road Travel Considerations
If you plan to drive your own vehicle, ensure you have all necessary ownership documents, a valid driving permit recognized in Kenya, and vehicle insurance such as the COMESA Yellow Card.
Guidance only — confirm visa, entry and health requirements with the official embassy or eVisa portal before you travel.
