Mara & Diani Signature Escape – Fly-In Bush and Beach
Tour Overview
Looking for a seamless luxury escape from Kampala? Kenya's iconic Maasai Mara and pristine Diani Beach are just a short flight away, offering a world-class bush and beach experience right on your doorstep.
Your adventure begins in Nairobi, where a dedicated meet-and-greet team assists you from the moment you land. After a short transfer to Wilson Airport, you board a light aircraft bound for the Maasai Mara. The city falls away quickly, replaced by patchwork farms and finally by the rolling acacia-dotted plains that have come to define the safari dream. By the time you touch down at the bush airstrip, your safari vehicle is waiting, chilled refreshments at hand, ready to turn your transfer into your first game drive.
In the Mara, you spend two nights at an intimate, well-situated tented camp inside or adjacent to the main reserve, in a wildlife-rich sector chosen for predator activity and open landscapes. Spacious canvas suites with proper beds, ensuite bathrooms and hot showers create a sense of classic safari, while solar power and careful water use reflect a modern conservation ethic. You head out at first light and late afternoon when the animals are at their most active, and at night you fall asleep to a chorus of distant lion calls and the rustle of the savannah.
Game drives are unhurried and interpretive rather than box-ticking. Your professional guide tracks big cats along the riverbanks, follows elephant herds as they move between grazing grounds, and pauses patiently with you at cheetah sightings rather than rushing to the next vehicle cluster. Between drives you return to camp for freshly prepared meals, time by the pool, and perhaps a short guided walk around camp to learn more about plants, tracks and the smaller creatures that underpin the ecosystem.
On day three you take to the skies once more, flying via Nairobi or direct to Ukunda Airstrip. As you descend, the Mara’s golden grasslands give way to turquoise lagoons, coral reefs and long, empty beaches. A short road transfer takes you to your beach retreat, a boutique property on Diani’s quieter stretch, where palm-fringed gardens lead you down to the sand. Here the days move to a gentler rhythm: breakfast on an ocean-facing terrace, leisurely swims, spa treatments and sunset walks along the tideline.
While the focus at the coast is relaxation, there is plenty to do if you wish. You might opt for a half-day dhow excursion in search of dolphins, a guided snorkelling trip over the reef or a reef walk at low tide with a local marine guide. Back at the lodge, you can simply enjoy warm Indian Ocean breezes, fresh seafood and a carefully curated drinks list. The final morning offers time for one last swim before your transfer to Ukunda Airstrip and your flight back to Nairobi, where your onward arrangements begin.
Throughout the journey, the logistics are designed to remove friction: scheduled flights minimize long road transfers, private vehicle safaris keep game viewing exclusive, and your properties are chosen for reliable service and consistent quality. Expera Adventures also partners with camps and lodges that contribute to local conservancies and community projects, ensuring that your stay supports sustainable land use, wildlife protection and livelihoods in both the Mara and along the coast.
This itinerary is ideal for first-time visitors seeking a high-quality introduction to Kenya, couples wanting a short but indulgent break, or business travellers looking to add a curated mini-safari and beach stay to a regional trip. It can also be tailored with extra nights in either the Mara or Diani, or upgraded with a hot air balloon flight or private catamaran charter, to match the pace and level of exclusivity you prefer.
Tour Highlights
Planning your trip from Uganda
Your trip begins with the easy one-hour flight to Nairobi. From there, we handle everything. A short transfer takes you to Wilson Airport, the hub for Kenya's safari circuit, for your light aircraft flight into the Maasai Mara. You'll soar over the Great Rift Valley before touching down in the legendary reserve, famous for its vast, open savannahs and incredible density of predators. This landscape, wider and more expansive than many of Uganda's national parks, provides the classic safari backdrop seen in documentaries worldwide.
Your home for two nights is an intimate tented camp, combining rustic elegance with modern comforts like ensuite bathrooms and comfortable beds. Your days are timed to the rhythms of the wildlife: early morning and late afternoon game drives with an expert guide, tracking lions, cheetahs, and vast herds of elephants. The experience is unhurried, focusing on quality sightings rather than ticking off a list. In the quiet midday hours, you can relax by the pool or simply soak in the sounds of the African bush.
On day three, you'll swap the savannah for the sea. Another scenic flight whisks you from the Mara to Kenya's south coast. As you descend, the golden plains give way to the brilliant blue of the Indian Ocean. Your destination is Diani Beach, consistently voted one of Africa's best. We've selected a boutique retreat on a quieter stretch of sand, where your focus shifts from game drives to pure relaxation. Stroll along powder-soft beaches, swim in the warm ocean, or opt for a dhow trip to explore the nearby coral reefs.
This itinerary is perfectly suited for a special occasion or a quick, high-impact holiday without the hassle of long-distance travel. With all internal flights, transfers, and premium accommodation seamlessly arranged, it's a chance to experience two of Kenya's most prized jewels in just five days.
Visa & Entry
As a citizen of Uganda, you can enjoy visa-free travel to Kenya for tourism. You may enter using a valid Ugandan Passport with at least six months of validity or a valid National ID card that is biometric and enabled for travel under East African Community agreements. It is always wise to confirm the latest entry requirements with the Kenyan High Commission before your trip.
Flights & Connections
The journey from Uganda is exceptionally convenient. Numerous daily flights on carriers like Kenya Airways and Uganda Airlines connect Entebbe (EBB) to Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in about one hour. From Nairobi, your itinerary includes scheduled light aircraft flights from Wilson Airport directly to the Maasai Mara and Diani, making access to these remote locations swift and scenic.
Health, Climate & Packing
While Kenya's climate is similar to Uganda's, a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for travel between the two countries. We strongly advise consulting your doctor regarding malaria prophylaxis for both the Maasai Mara and the coastal region. Pack lightweight layers: warm fleeces for chilly Mara mornings and evenings, and light cottons, swimwear, and a sun hat for the warm, humid conditions in Diani.
Money, Time & Culture
Kenya's currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES), though US Dollars are widely accepted for larger payments at tourist lodges. Credit cards are also common, but having KES for tips and small purchases is useful; note that M-Pesa is the dominant mobile money platform. Best of all, Kenya is in the same time zone as Uganda (EAT, GMT+3), so you won't lose any time to jet lag. Electrical plugs are Type G, the same three-pin rectangular plug used in Uganda.
East African Resident Rates
As a citizen of an East African Community country, you may be eligible for resident rates on park fees and at certain lodges. Please inquire with your Expera concierge when booking to see if any discounts can be applied.
Mobile Connectivity & Money
While in Kenya, your Ugandan SIM will work on roaming, but getting a local Safaricom SIM card upon arrival at JKIA is recommended for cheaper data and access to the M-Pesa mobile money network. Unlike in Uganda, M-Pesa is the near-universal platform for mobile payments.
Guidance only — confirm visa, entry and health requirements with the official embassy or eVisa portal before you travel.
