Tour Overview

For South Africans familiar with the wonders of the bush, this Kenyan journey offers a seamless new perspective, swapping the Lowveld for the legendary plains of the Maasai Mara and the Indian Ocean's turquoise coast.

This signature Expera Adventures journey is crafted for travelers who want to feel Kenya’s wild savannah and Indian Ocean coast in a single, effortless sweep. From the moment you land in Nairobi, every transfer, flight and lodge has been curated to remove friction, maximize time in nature and keep your footprint light. It’s ideal for couples, families or small groups who value comfort, thoughtful guiding and a quiet respect for the places they visit. Your adventure opens in Nairobi, where a dedicated Expera representative welcomes you, assists with formalities and shares a brief orientation to Kenya’s landscapes and conservation story. Depending on your arrival time, you may have the option to visit a wildlife or cultural initiative that Expera supports, or simply rest at a well-located city hotel. This short pause allows you to reset from international travel and prepare for the immersion that follows. You then board a scenic flight into the Maasai Mara, descending over a patchwork of acacia-dotted plains and winding rivers. For the next days, your base is a carefully chosen tented camp or lodge that blends comfort with a genuine sense of place. Game drives take place in the early morning and late afternoon when wildlife is most active and light is gentle for photography. Your guide focuses not only on the famous big cats and plains game, but also on the smaller interactions that bring the ecosystem to life: courting birds, busy dung beetles, and the quiet rhythm of Maasai livestock moving on community lands at the reserve edge. Evenings in the Mara are intentionally unhurried. You might enjoy sundowners overlooking the plains, a campfire conversation about local conservation challenges, or a private dinner under the stars. Expera partners with properties that actively support wildlife corridors, anti-poaching initiatives or community-driven tourism, and your stay contributes directly to those projects. There is flexibility built into the program to adapt to your interests: focus on photography, track specific species, or take time to simply sit and listen to the bush. From the savannah you transition south to the coast on a scheduled flight route that minimizes backtracking and long drives. On arrival at Ukunda airstrip, the air turns humid and salt-laden, and towering palms signal your move into a different ecosystem. Diani Beach offers powder-soft white sand, turquoise shallows and coral-rich waters, and your oceanfront resort has been selected for its quieter ambience, quality of service and commitment to responsible coastal practices such as reef protection and reduced single-use plastics. Your days on the coast are intentionally open. Walk the beach at sunrise as fishermen return with their overnight catch, explore tidal pools and mangroves with a local guide, or head out on a snorkeling excursion with operators who respect the reef’s limits. The resort’s pool, spa and shaded lounges invite slow time between activities, and the cuisine showcases fresh seafood and tropical produce with options for different dietary preferences. For families, optional add-ons like a dhow cruise or gentle camel rides can be included without compromising safety or cultural sensitivity. Throughout the journey, Expera manages all logistics and confirmations behind the scenes so that your days flow smoothly from city to savannah to sea. Transport is operated by reputable aviation and ground partners, and vehicles used on game drives adhere to strict maintenance and guiding standards. The itinerary can be tailored for different lengths or levels of privacy, including private charter legs or exclusive-use safari vehicles upon request. The result is a balanced, premium experience that offers enough structure to feel secure and enough flexibility to feel personal – a quiet harmony between Kenya’s iconic landscapes and your own pace of travel. This Mara-to-Diani circuit suits both first-time visitors and those returning to Kenya who want to revisit familiar places with deeper context. By linking two high-demand regions with a conservation-aware lens, it creates an accessible yet elevated way to understand the connections between inland wildlife habitats and coastal ecosystems, and how tourism choices can support both. It’s an experience designed not only to be memorable now, but also to leave you with a clearer sense of how this remarkable country is working to protect its natural heritage for generations to come.

Planning your trip from South Africa

Imagine stepping off a direct flight from Johannesburg and, within hours, finding yourself in the heart of the Maasai Mara. Our Coastal & Savannah Harmony tour is designed to make this transition effortless, connecting you directly to Kenya’s most iconic landscapes without the long drives you might be used to from home.

This is a different kind of safari. While you know the thrill of a game drive, the Mara offers a unique spectacle: vast, open grasslands stretching to the horizon, dotted with acacia trees and teeming with life. Here, the sheer density of wildlife is staggering. Our expert guides, deeply rooted in the local ecology, will go beyond just spotting the Big Five, revealing the intricate behaviours and stories of the ecosystem, from the politics of a lion pride to the drama of a river crossing.

The experience is curated for comfort and immersion. Instead of navigating park gates and self-driving, you'll fly directly into the reserve, staying at an intimate tented camp that blends safari authenticity with the level of service you'd expect from a top Sabi Sands lodge. Evenings are for sundowners overlooking the plains and dinners under a canopy of stars, a world away from the city buzz.

After soaking in the savannah, a scheduled flight whisks you from the bush to the beach. You'll trade the crisp air of the Mara for the warm, humid breezes of Diani on the Indian Ocean. This isn’t just any beach; Diani is a stretch of powder-white sand fringed by palm trees and protected by a vibrant coral reef. Your time here is deliberately unstructured. Relax at our chosen oceanfront resort, snorkel in the clear waters of the marine park, or simply enjoy the fresh seafood and Swahili flavours that define coastal Kenyan cuisine.

For a South African traveller, this 5-day journey is the perfect, high-impact Kenyan introduction. It combines the familiar thrill of the wild with the exotic allure of a tropical coast, all packaged with the seamless logistics and quiet luxury that define an Expera adventure. We handle everything, from the moment you land in Nairobi to your final departure, so you can focus entirely on the experience.

Visa & Entry

While South African passport holders were previously visa-exempt, Kenya has introduced a mandatory Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) for all visitors. You must apply and pay for your eTA online prior to your departure. Your passport should be valid for at least six months from your date of entry and have at least two blank pages. Always confirm the latest eTA requirements on Kenya's official government portal before booking.

Flights & Connections

The most convenient route is a direct flight from Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi. Kenya Airways operates this route daily, with a flight time of approximately four hours. From Nairobi, your onward internal flights to the Maasai Mara and Diani are included in the tour.

Health, Climate & Packing

Kenya is a malaria-risk area, including the Maasai Mara and the coast, so consulting your doctor about anti-malarial medication is essential before you travel. Unlike much of South Africa, Kenya's equatorial climate means warm days and cool nights in the Mara, and hot, humid conditions in Diani. Pack layers for safari drives—a warm fleece for early mornings is a must—along with light clothing, swimwear, and sun protection for the coast.

Money, Time & Culture

Kenya's currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES), but US Dollars are widely used for tourist activities and tipping. It's best to carry some USD in cash and use a credit card for larger payments at lodges. Don't bother bringing South African Rand (ZAR) as it's not easily exchanged. Kenya is one hour ahead of South Africa, and uses the Type G (UK-style 3-pin) plug, so you will need an adapter.

Connectivity on the Go

Your South African mobile network's roaming charges can be high. For easy connectivity, consider purchasing a Safaricom or Airtel SIM card upon arrival at Nairobi airport or using an eSIM service.

Tipping Customs

Tipping is customary for good service. We recommend tipping safari guides around $10-15 USD per person per day, and lodge staff via a central tip box. It is appreciated in either USD or Kenyan Shillings.

A Taste of Kenya

While you'll find excellent grilled meats (nyama choma), be sure to try the unique Swahili dishes on the coast, which feature coconut, spices, and fresh seafood, offering a delicious contrast to familiar braai flavours.

Guidance only — confirm visa, entry and health requirements with the official embassy or eVisa portal before you travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Currently, a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is not required for travelers arriving directly from South Africa. However, regulations can change, so we advise checking with your travel clinic or the Kenyan High Commission in Pretoria before your trip.

While both are iconic, the Mara is known for its vast, unfenced grassy plains and incredible density of predators. The biggest differentiator is the scale of the Great Migration (July-October) and the vibrant, visible Maasai culture that coexists with the wildlife.

No, the South African Rand is not accepted and is difficult to exchange in Kenya. It is best to use US Dollars for larger payments and tips, Kenyan Shillings for small purchases, and a credit card at established hotels and lodges.

Yes, it's very straightforward. A direct 4-hour flight from Johannesburg to Nairobi is the standard route. Our team meets you right at the airport in Nairobi to handle all your onward connections seamlessly.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Follow your journey through 5 incredible days of adventure.

1

Arrival in Nairobi and Journey Briefing

Approx. 20–30 km road transfer in Nairobi 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on traffic
On arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, an Expera Adventures representative greets you, assists with immigration formalities where possible, and transfers you to a comfortable Nairobi hotel chosen for its convenient location and professional service. During the short drive, you receive an overview of the journey ahead, including safari expectations, conservation context and practical tips to help you settle in. Depending on your arrival time, there may be an opportunity to visit a local wildlife or cultural initiative that Expera supports, or you may prefer to rest at the hotel and adjust to the new time zone. In the evening, enjoy a relaxed dinner either at the hotel restaurant or a nearby venue, with the option to sample Kenyan flavors. Your guide or host confirms the next day’s flight details and answers any questions so you can retire with a clear plan and a sense of anticipation for the landscapes you will soon explore.

Road transfer to Nairobi hotel
Journey briefing and safari orientation
Optional short city or cultural visit

Scenic Flight to Maasai Mara and First Game Drive

Flight approx. 45–60 minutes; airstrip to camp 10–30 km Airstrip transfer and game drive 2–3 hours combined
After breakfast, you are transferred to Wilson Airport for your scheduled light aircraft flight into the Maasai Mara. The short flight offers sweeping views of the Great Rift Valley and patchwork farms giving way to open savannah. On landing at the Mara airstrip, your safari guide welcomes you and conducts a short game-viewing transfer to your camp or lodge, often spotting wildlife within minutes of arrival. You check into your tent or room and enjoy lunch before a brief rest. In the late afternoon, you head out on your first full game drive, exploring plains and riverine forests in search of elephants, big cats, giraffes and abundant plains game. Your guide introduces the area’s ecological dynamics, the role of seasonal migrations and the community lands that border the reserve. As the sun sets, you pause at a scenic spot for sundowners before returning to camp. Dinner is served either in the main dining area or under the stars, and the sounds of the bush accompany you as you settle into the rhythm of safari life.

Scheduled light aircraft flight to Maasai Mara
Airstrip meet and game-drive transfer to camp
Afternoon game drive with sundowners
Dinner and overnight in tented camp or lodge
3

Full Day Immersion in the Maasai Mara

Variable driving distances within the Mara ecosystem Total wildlife viewing time 5–7 hours across the day
A pre-dawn wake-up allows you to be out on the plains as the sky lightens and predators are most active. With coffee or tea to start the day, you set off on a morning game drive tailored to the day’s conditions and sightings, possibly visiting river crossings, open grasslands or woodland edges. Your guide reads tracks and behavior, helping you understand the interactions between species rather than simply ticking off a list. Depending on your preference and camp style, you may return to camp for a hot brunch and rest around midday or carry a packed breakfast to enjoy at a scenic point during your drive. The middle of the day is left free for relaxation, optional bush walks where permitted, or time with camp staff to learn more about local conservation and community projects. In the afternoon, a second game drive explores a different sector or returns to follow up on morning sightings. As the light softens, you have more time for photography and quiet observation. Back at camp, an evening around the fire or a private dinner offers space to reflect on the day and discuss plans for tomorrow.
Activities: Early morning game drive
Bush breakfast or camp brunch
Midday rest or optional bush walk
Afternoon game drive
Evening campfire or starlit dinner
4

Transition from Savannah to Indian Ocean Coast

Mara camp to airstrip 10–30 km; Ukunda airstrip to resort 5–15 km Total road transfers 1.5–2 hours across the day
After a final morning in the Mara, you may choose a short sunrise game drive or a relaxed breakfast at camp. Your guide then transfers you back to the airstrip for the flight to Nairobi, where you connect to a scheduled service to Ukunda, serving Diani Beach. Expera coordinates all ticketing and timings so the connections remain as smooth as possible. On arrival at Ukunda airstrip, a resort vehicle or Expera driver meets you for the short transfer to your oceanfront accommodation. The contrast with the savannah is immediate: lush coastal vegetation, warm breezes and the distant sound of waves breaking on the reef. After check-in and a briefing from resort staff, you have the remainder of the afternoon free to explore the beach, swim in the pool or simply rest under the shade of palms. As evening approaches, you can stroll along the shoreline or enjoy a drink overlooking the water before a fresh, seafood-forward dinner. Staff highlight optional activities for the following day, including reef-friendly snorkeling, dhow cruises or visits to nearby points of interest.

Resort to Ukunda airstrip approx. 5–15 km; to Mombasa 35–45 km 30 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on departure point
Your final morning is designed to be as relaxed or active as you wish. Early risers may walk the beach at first light, watching local fishermen return and observing shorebirds feeding at the water’s edge. After breakfast, you could take a short dip in the ocean or pool, browse local crafts at the resort boutique, or simply sit with a coffee and absorb the view. Check-out time is coordinated with your onward flight, and your driver transfers you back to Ukunda airstrip or to Mombasa, depending on your arrangements. As you travel, your host can help you reflect on the journey, offering suggestions for future explorations of Kenya’s less-visited regions or other East African circuits that align with your interests.
